My first delay pedal was a Line 6 DL4, in early 2004. I couldn’t afford it but it changed my life.

This arrived yesterday. I haven’t plugged it in yet (or even opened the box!) but I’m excited

You'll need a bigger pedalboard though, I'm guessing?

I wonder what it is about that pedal that has caught the imagination of users. If I remember correctly there was a modulation pedal (MM-4?) launched at the same time that has just disappeared off into history without any of the same affection that the Dl-4 has.

The best delay pedal I ever had - if it wasn’t for the massive volume drop when engaged, I’d still have it

I just set mine to digital bypass instead of true bypass.

Mine did something odd when I was using it as a looper at a gig - it got stuck on the loop from the previous song, and nothing would make it stop until finally I pulled the power plug out. It never did it again, but I didn’t trust it after that and eventually sold it.

It did have some great sounds though - the Sweep Echo in particular was one of my favourites.

Minus The Bear! Ed O'Brien! How is the looper? Part of me is thinking of getting one for home looper needs as it might have some uses beyond that

Very basic but easy to use, maximum 28 seconds, no retention after power off. Or at least, that’s the original…

Thrifty tip: the original dl4 delay algorithms are in the m series, along with a load of other stuff.

The looper is truly excellent and intuitive for ambient and improv looping. Not great if you want to do the Ed Sheeran solo act thing because loops naturally fade out every time you record an overdub and will eventually disappear.

You can see how it was a groundbreaking looper at the time and why players like Frisell adopted it. I keep one plugged in so I can just sit down and see what happens. Great stuff. The looper in the dedicated JM4 just doesn't capture the same magic somehow, and neither does the Helix algorithm.

The new one is much longer, although I can't think how much off the top of my head.

That's cool. I'm after a looper to keep at home (or on its own PT Nano etc) for practice and torn between something with drums / saves or something more musical and manipulating to have at the end of my chain. Always loved the ambient / glitchy stuff people have got out of the 'other' green pedal!

Ok so plugged in for an hour or so this afternoon. Very happy

It's not the best sounding delay (ADG-1, Meraki or Echosystem for my money), or the absolute easiest to use (Timefactor probably still, even 10 years later, as long as you have an extra aux switch), but my god it's just so easy to get inspiring sounds and then just sit there and play the damn thing.

I wouldn't use it for a covers set where I want a load of presets that include non-delay stuff as the HX Stomp or H90 is probably better suited for that role. But as a tool for jams and creative work where you just want to be able to dial up basically anything you can think of in like 6 seconds it's pretty much unparalleled

And the looper is still ace.

There's a reason this thing was central to the boards of basically everyone from 2002-2007 or so because it's just so damn easy

(Sidenote - I thought about getting a silver or black edition for similar money but there's just something about that green...)

    Easy is good!

I’ll take ease of use above subjectively best tones any day.

great stuff. This thread has me incredibly GASing for one now! I'm after an intuitive / idiot-proof looper but the more wacky effects on there might also do it for me. I realise Ed O'Brien uses one now exclusively for looping (I swear L6 has a Looper in the "4" family back in the day?) and agree - there is something about the green! Has it ever been cheaper than the 185 its going now?

You’re not going insane! JM4 was the jam/looper
