Is he being really clever and doing something that will get him views? Probably not and its just a case of more money than sense.

Just separately, what is the actual pickup route for the PRS Paul's Guitar? On the face of it, it looks like you can't change those either.

About 3mm too narrow (neck-to-bridge) for a Humbucker to fit in there. Trust me, I’ve measured and considered it for mine!  For all intents & purposes, no - you can’t change those ones out for much, but Soapbars, Firebird or Mini HBs would work with some custom-made mounting rings, and still be reversible.

@OP - each to their own, it might be a silly idea from a resale perspective, but it’s their money to burn and likely recouped from the views!

They will make from views and the sales of their Tonex packs etc, and a channel like theirs constantly needs new content to keep things ticking along, and whether you find yourself thinking it's needless mods or a great idea the content gets made and is informative for many.

Many guitars have a re-sale value. Some you'll never want to sell.

I would be a bit perturbed if he was actively criticising the stock pickups and recommending replacement pickups as a significant improvement, but really all he's doing is documenting the modding progress of a guitar that he obviously wanted to experiment with and get clicks.  The idiots will be the ones that watch it and think that his expensive and unnecessary "upgrades" are worth doing to their own instruments just because he did them.

I see he's changed the bridge to a VegaTrem, I remember an earlier video where they were impressed with that bridge.

On an SE there is room for different pickups, but not in the core. I took the plate off my core to have a look, and the routes will not fit standard strat pickups. Only stuff like Lace Sensors or others without the "tab" on them for the hookup wires.

OK, now I've actually watched the video (and the two previous ones)... agreed with the above.

I haven't seen many Studio Rats videos but I know they do stuff "just because".  One I did watch was a comparison between four very high end Strat-types - Tyler. Suhr, Anderson and Shabat, I think - which they'd acquired at their own expense.  I guess they have good channels for selling on guitars, because that's not something I'd do...

But it's no different from TPS or other YouTubers who spend their lives in search of the perfect vintage Strat tone.

One thing I would say... when he was getting the guitar refinished he could've easily had it routed for regular Strat pickups, and then he wouldn't have needed the Ron Ellis ones to have custom baseplates.

Slightly surprised by this as I put a JB Jnr in the bridge of mine (sinced returned to stock) without any problem.

Ah yeah, the JB Junior doesn't have the hookup wire tabs (none of the Duncan rails do), so they'll fit too.

Just for some context, because again… click bait threads…

This is a 2018 Silver Sky which had a urethane/acrylic finish. Cost him about a grand. He then spent £600 on a refret and refinish, upon stripping the body he found an unattractive 3 piece body with filler which scuppered his ideas of a sunburst finish. As he’s pointed out, a second hand nitro PRS SS would be about £1600 anyway (although I’m too lazy to check this out). Obviously projects like this generate content and views, no harm done on that front. At least he’s a cracking player and did offer plenty of info and background on what happened.

So, perhaps the question should be - “why was I quick to judge someone having fun with their own money and showing off their latest project?”

And if you think this is “stupid”, don’t look at the classic car market and how they do things.. you might implode.

Paul is a nice guy - used to live near me and we used to do work for him 20+ years ago
Also went to my high school - not at the same time as me though

    Not stupid at all.

    1: It's fun to experiment.
2: It was a bit of a beater in the first place.
3: It has caused people to share the video and claim it was stupid thus driving more people to watch it, increasing his YT earnings and his capture sales, and maybe even his session work too.

I put £350+ of upgrades into a cheap bass I got for about £100. Proportionally that was far more stupid... but now I have an instrument that is often my first choice. Plays easy, sounds great.

  • So he bought a 2nd hand beat-up early Silver Sky (Urethane finish) for cheap, and modded it to a spec he wanted , as essentially he likes a lot of what the Silver Sky is about, but not everything.

    Seems entirely reasonable to me.

He's making money from clicks on his content which exists to make money from clicks (not to mention the paid promotion), so probably not stupid. The whole idea that this is what he really wants / needs as a musician as opposed to a marketeer is bizarre.

Dude's a great player, can craft some really good tones, I learnt a lot from his tone shaping videos, and now he also shows how he modded a factory specced guitar to be a better one. Nice stuff. IMO suggesting he's stupid is unfair.

His tones appear to be identical in every video...  Is that teh "magic"?
