Deftones suggestions?

What's Hot
Despite liking a lot of music from that era, the Deftones were not really on my radar for some reason and I'm unfamiliar with their material. A couple of my students have mentioned they like them, so I'm looking into possible riffs to do with them.

Looking for material that's accessible/not advanced, for six string guitars with no crazy detuning.  Standard tuning perfect, Drop D fine, I keep a couple of my guitars in Eb standard so that could work also at a push. Obviously tunes that are well known to their fans would be good.

Anything spring to mind for me to check out?

The problem you're going to have is that early deftones stuff (the first few albums) tends to be in Drop C, or Drop C#, and then to make it worse at some point Stephen Carpenter switched to playing seven strings.

The good news is that they don't really do "solos" so you can generally learn a Deftones song pretty quickly once you get the riffs down.

Can highly recommend "My Own Summer" as it contains some absolutely banging riffs and is also really easy to play - most of the song is one finger drop tuning fun.

If you really want to earn brownie points then learn Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away) - not because it's hard, but because it's probably their best loved song and is instantly recognisable.

Everything is either drop tuned or played on a 7 or 8 string.

If my memory serves me right the first album was in standard tuning, fucking hell man I'm old as I remember learning to play Root just after it was released.

I then remember Around the Fur coming out, and learning some tracks from that, and a few of them were in Dropped D, but downtuned a semi tone.

Their first two albums are absolute classics, give them a listen.

I'm really happy to hear there are a new generation of kids discovering them.  Stephen Carpenter is a fantastic guitarist, manages to capture a lot in some riffs which aren't always the most difficult to play, doesn't overcomplicate things.

Their cover of Sleep Walk is also good if you want to sneak that one in through the back door!

Funnily enough one of my learner's asked to learn Engine No.9 which I believe is in standard, though in this playthrough video he's using a 7 string (the low string that's meant to be a B is an E so its probably a thicker gauge for more punchiness on the riff).

Most YouTube covers are on a 6-string anyway.

That guitar has an extra High E for the 7th string.

Yeah so two high e strings, probably for that harmonic hit in between the powerchords. I'll just ask my learner to play it on the thinnest three strings lol

I remember reading an interview somewhere and they'd use a 7 string with 2 high E's, as if in case they break a high e during a song they can finish the song.

I don't think a 7 string is needed for that song, when I saw them and they played it, it was when he was playing a 6 string ESP Horizon if my memory serves me right.  I saw them play at the London Astoria in 1997/1998 for the Around the Fur tour when I was a teenager, it was incredible!
