Celestion G12m speaker help needed!

newi123newi123 Frets: 1260
So I listed my Marshall 2061cx cab on Reverb - a potential buyer spotted the back plate was on upside down. I had never noticed this in the years I`ve had it (9 or 10 yrs I guess, I bought it SH)

I`ve taken the back plate off, and it doesn`t have the original speakers. I think it`s supposed to have g12h 30w speakers. In fact it has 2 different g12m speakers:

g12m 25w 16ohm labelled `Celestion International, Ipswich England`
g12m 20w 15 ohm labelled `Celestion LTD, Thames Ditton, Surrey`

See attached pics!

Any info on age / value would be appreciated! Thanks

Well, the labelled speaker is dated 2011. The previous owner may have changed them to lessen the bass and increase the mids and compression?

Cheers - it says tested 2011, which kind of implies to me it may have been an older speaker being fitted?

They’re both modern reissues - the G12M-25 is a standard Greenback, the G12M-20 is a Heritage.

I took it down whilst working out what the speakers were.

For me that would be an upgrade - I really like G12Ms

Years ago I had a Marshall 18 water combo that had a G12H30 in. It was good but quite bassy so I decided to try a G12M25 in it and much preferred it.

Also I found that the difference it made to the sound increased as the volume did.
    Red ones are better.

  • I wish people wouldn't put stickers on  speaker frames like that.

Once it's been on there long enough, it will peel the paint off the frame too if you ever try to remove it. A pro speaker place should know better.

    ...
    That's how I took it.

The heritage G12Ms got discontinued around 2021...I have a couple in a 2x12. That's 40w in total so I tend not to make it available as backline ;)

I seem to remember Marshall doing a reissue 20w speaker at some stage, almost like the speakers that went in the Bluesbreakers back in the day.

Edit: it seems these were in the 1974cx extension cabs.

I've one of those 20W Heritage in my 1x12.

Truth is they were actually Ipswich made,

My particular speaker came from the other guitarist in the band I used t play with. His uncle worked for Celestion at the time, when he got it, he was told to leave it for a couple days to let all the glue dry before he played it,.

I've had it about 3 years now and had it in a Deluxe reverb, and a couple of different tone kings, It seems to make everything I put it in sound better.

The Thames Ditton factory closed down in 1975. They only have those labels on them to replicate the 1960's labels.

Fwiw the G12-EVH speaker is supposedly the same as the 20w heritage, just with a different label on it. So in that sense you can still buy them.
