Valenton GP5 - my demo using NAM profiles

What's Hot

This demo is about the GP5 feature that allows NAM ( Neural Amp Modeler ) files to be imported to the unit.

They are full NAM rigs , so no IR´s needed.

It was recorded direct to my audio interface with no FX.

  • The JCM800 sounds nothing like a JCM800.

  • I bought one of these just out of curiosity. Honestly, it seems half-finished. The midi implementation is weird (e.g., using CC instead of PC for patch changes) and to my ears, importing a NAM file and then converting to its own internal format seems to make the sound woolly and a little muffled. Honestly, for £79, I can just throw it in the gig box and it would rescue me, and no-one apart from me would be able to tell I was using it when playing to a bunch of pissed up punters. However,  I can't help feeling that my Zoom MS-50G which is probably ten years old now, just does everything better.

    This video is quite good.

TLDR for all of the cheaper ones is

The NAM models are close but not quite as good as a real NAM modeller.

All the other effects are quite a lot worse than something higher end.

The latency of the cheap units is pretty bad (around 5ms+) compared to 1.5ms for things like Tonex.

In summary you get what you pay for and shelling out 3x the price for a Tonex is probably worth it. However lots of people have said the Pocket Master is brilliant for a headphone practice tool.

Has anyone compared as directly as possible a valeton against a tonex pedal with the same or very similar capture?

    There are quite a few.

General opinion seems to be it's close but not quite as good and the latency is quite a bit worse + the other effects on the Tonex are much better.

Thanks. There is quite a difference in price though. Even the tonex one is almost twice the price of the valeton. I guess it all comes down to how much of a difference there is, especially with same capture. Someone on the gear page posted an interesting comparison and there was not much in it.
