  • Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve got a 20W Rift 15 HP on the way from a forum member here. Looking forward to trying it out with the band

  • I have a tweed Bandmaster 57 RI for sale,  has a bit more headroom than 5E3.

^The bandmaster might be a good shout.

If I was building this, I would go for a Tweed Deluxe running 6L6 with a bandmaster output transformer and variable voltage switch on the front or possibly even a cathode bias/ fixed bias switch on the back which would get you from 20w to 30-40w with the flick of a switch.

Origin Deluxe 55, Fryette Powerstation and a 1x12 cab. You can set the Deluxe 55 to edge of breakup and then dial loudness to taste on the Powerstation.
This but with a little 5w tweed amp (Swart Space Tone) is my new rig and I'm loving it - suddenly the tone/breakup level is 100% independent from the volume level!

It also adds fx loop and line-out ability to any amp, plus some extra tone shaping controls.

The Pro Junior I had was insanely loud for a 15w amp - through a 2x12 it was easily giggable

Tweed Super. 2x10 of swirly tweedness. Flynn amps do one for sensible money.
This is what I use! Great amp bought from a forum member i think, but can't remember who now...

Mine has a 1x12 baffle fitted, with a celestion gold.

  • So far so good with the Rift. Definitely no concerns keeping up with a band - volume on 3-4 and guitar volume backed off halfway is plenty loud enough for rhythm parts. Takes light boosts and ODs really well too

Sorry if I missed it but what speaker are you running in the Rift?

I've found the right speaker makes all of the difference in my Ceriatone tweed 5E3. I run a Eminence GA-SC64.

But I guess there is tube breakup and speaker breakup.

Plus tweed breakup is the best tone!

I always worry when I read about "speaker breakup" because I recall reading something from a Celestion tech to the effect that it is a myth that guitar speakers need to be driven to 95% of their power rating to sound good*. He also said that in the event a speaker IS "breaking up" it is just a watt or two away from total failure.

"Yes, I know about V30s and their poor tone at milliwatt levels but that is a response and "loudness curves" thing, not blow the **** out of it. Five watts through a 60W speaker can sound v good and is WAY too loud for most homes!

    Dave.
