Fitting 6L6s in a Deluxe Reverb is possible because it has a mismatch as stock which the valve swap helps to correct and does actually increase the power slightly, the tremolo is optical not bias, and there's more bias range.
No, all you can do is reduce the gain with types other than the 12AX7.
What are you putting through it? A Princeton normally breaks up well before full power.
It sounds like you either need a Deluxe, or even better a Rivera-series Princeton Reverb II.
