Budget Modellers - Home Use & Backup

What's Hot
I'd like to dip my toe into the world of modelling - after having to recently do a gig on a silent stage which resulted in me using an IR pedal at the end of my pedalboard i thought it might be worthwhile getting something a bit more suitable. My last modelling adventure was a Line 6 Pod XT Live and obviously things have moved on since then.

I'd like to:
  • Be able to take it to rehearsal instead of lugging my big amp around
  • Stick in the gigbag as a backup in case my amp dies during a gig
  • Run headphones out of it for silent practice at home
  • Ideally run an aux cable or even bluetooth music to it to jam along to
  • Budget up to £150 either new or S/H

There's obviously loads of options out there and it's all a bit baffling to me. There also seems to be quite a bit of overlap where i think some units may be the same with different branding. For example this gear 4 music offering which i've also found on other websites with prices ranging from under £50 to £80:

What i like about this one is it is rechargeable so that could be quite useful.
I've seen the sonicake pocket master - however I'd prefer it to be an actual pedal.

So I'm asking for any recommendations and also a bit of honesty if these budget options are not any good and i'd be better off just buying an old POD or Boss ME unit ?

  • The Valeton GP-5 is great, but depends how many switching options you’d need.

I watched a good roundup of these pedals (all 3 mentioned)

Essentially the modelling is quite good but the latency is quite high at 5ms rather than 1ms on a Tonex.

  • The Sonicake Pocket Master isn't an actual pedal? That's new to me.

  • I bet you could get a used Line 6 Pod Go for around that budget..

is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

I have one and I’ve used the buttons as footswitches and it’s been fine.… How else can you use a looper?

  • I’d get an old pod. They’re absolutely fine as a backup/headphone practice thing. Super cheap and available. Save your money for something more fun.

Guess who discovered he has a £39 credit balance on AliExpress from 5 years ago !

I've just ordered an M-Vave black box - which was £7 taking into account the credit balance.

Going to see how that goes and keep an eye out for something else on the s/h market too.

I was going to suggest using a midi pedal like the Mvave chocolate plus with the sonicake, works great

Ive just got a Valeton GP-5 mainly as a smaller backup to replace my old zoom G3.

Really impressed with it, especially for the £57 i paid for it. Guess the only slight downside is that you cant adjust levels/tone of a pedal in a patch easily, or I couldnt see how to do it, without using the phone app.

As per the manual, you can only edit patches via the phone app. But its a really good app thats incredibly easy to use, and you can use it to load IRs and NAMs too.
