Bet you can't play this Robert Fripp guitar part!

0:53 into this vid Fripp's playing is insane.
Just unbelievable picking / stamina. I tried using little left hand finger as well but think 3 index , middle and ring is easier to cover that initial figure.

Ahh yes, I've seen the video before. Great song! I still love that album. Although it is very 80s in some ways it still sounds incredibly fresh. I'm just looking at the track listing and every one is incredible:

    Elephant Talk
    Frame by Frame
    Matte Kudasai
    Indiscipline
    Thela Hun Ginjeet
    The Sheltering Sky
    Discipline

I guess I like Indiscipline and Thela Hun Ginjeet best. Both blew my mind when I first heard them.

One of the best gigs I've ever seen was this lineup at Hammersmith Palais. Brilliant from "everyone drumming" intro to the finish.

  • It’ll be in Fripp’s 5th tuning, but still
amazing. The way he drops a semi quaver is awesome, ( I assume it’s him as Belew is singing). Bruford is one of my favourite drummers. Such an excellent performance.

I have learned it in the past- the last 15 seconds is a fucking workout.

No, Frame by Frame is in standard tuning.

Discipline was released in 1981, Fripp didn't invent NST until 1983 and then really start using it until 1984/85.

I saw G3 at the Royal Albert Hall with Vai, Satriani and Fripp ... and in my opinion Fripp blew the others away. I had an opportunity to chat to Satriani after the show as my Missus production managed it ... he seemed a little in awe of Fripp ... which I found fascinating.

Fripp comes across as an odd bloke - but then, so is Ritchie Blackmore, another of my early role models. It cannot be denied that he has a unique musical voice with his instrument and has participated in delivering some fantastic music. And a little bit of me suspects the "odd bloke" aspect is a bit of a mask he hides behind.

I think his days as an innovator are over, but that doesn't detract from anything.

Incidentally, while Frame By Frame is fast, it's a repeated bit (the same thing on a solo track called Zero of the Signified, which goes on for longer) - the really difficult part is Fracture from 1973 - this is the original live version (the studio version is this with overdubs), which is an incredible and possibly insane technical feat:

(the difficult bit, the Moto Perpetuo, starts at about 2:50.

I was just listening to this earlier today and wondering what it looked like played. I'm tempted to learn it slowly as a practice routine. This album and Three of a Perfect pair really have some great songs and sounds.
