To sell My Axe-FX and FC12 or not......

What's Hot

After 18 years using Fractals - being the 2nd person in the UK to ever own one, and being a massive advocate of them... I bought an analogue rig lol.

Only for pure pleasure - I wanted a nice valve combo and analogue FX just because.  However..... my tastes have changed and my need for variety has also changed.  My person "tone hunt" got to the place where I know what I want to hear...  the Amp does that - and it has a speaker emulated out - that just sounds right in headphones or monitors.... Which begs the question - why keep the Axe-FX....  Its probably worth £2000?  Its the Axe-FX 3 Mk 2 - but not the turbo, plus the FC 12 so £2k ballpark I think based on Ebay sales.

Now thats a chunk of what Ive spent on the amp and pedals to recoup.... BUT.....  I can still use the Axe in the amps loop when using headphones or in a mix - as at that point its not longer a pure analogue signal patch anyway (the point of the amp indulgence) .  I can use it for massive reverbs - for FX I dont have, for different flavours of overdrives (I can insert it between my drive and modulation FX pedals too as well as in the loop) - so it could still have a use.   Also, I can (and do on occasion) use it as a dedicated FX processor for synths (again when I want massive reverbs or FX that arnt onboard my synths - or that I dont have analogue pedals dedicated to synths).

So - Im a little torn here..... keep it for the occasional use I will have for it - or sell it and recoup some of the outlay.  I dont need that - though of course it comes in handy.     If I had the FM9 Id just keep it.... it would be a great backup, and small footprint but the full on Axe-FX3 plus FXC12 isnt a chuck it in the car as a backup (If I ever gig as a guitarist that is - which I may never do).    Of Course it still backs up the amp at home - just in case it get a fault...

Im just 50/50 on this.  thoughts??

I'd sell it and buy a smaller Fractal unit if you want to retain a foot in that camp.

Don’t do it, you’ll only get another one a year down the line

Had thought about that - but frankly, the FM3 doesnt give me enough switches for how I run that rig.  Id need the FM9 - and theres not really much difference in buying an FM9 over selling the AFX3 +FC12.   If I sell - Ill sell, and possibly pick up the next generation of FM9 in a couple of years or 3 once Axe-FX4 is out and trickled down to the floorboards..

doubt it.   I HATE selling stuff, Its always a wrench for me - but once I have let something go Ive NEVER bought one back again.

Sell AF3, keep FC12 and use it with an FM3?
Really depends on whether you can settle for simpler presets compared to AF3. I've only ever had FM3 and FM9, don't feel the need for multi amp presets / pushing lush reverbs. I can see myself going back to FM3 type unit to save floor space on stage..but that's me.

  • I dont use multi amp setups, even so my main patch pushes 80%.  Fm3 wont cope i dont think.  Fm9 would

I guess the only other option would be FM3 + VP4, that would handle the workload but the footprint on floor is only slightly smaller than FM9 although you could opt to use a 2 tier type pedalboard to optimise the layout. Unless you bought those 2 s/h, you're not going to save any money...probably best to stick with what you've got because AF3 is likely to remain competitive with the "best of the best" for some time yet.

  • Can only comment on my experience and ymmv, but since I sold mine, I love my amps and pedals, but I miss elements of the Axe 3 and wish I had one here sometimes. Maybe treat it as a studio insert, given you don’t gig.
