I went back in and it looks fine now.

Let's assume a temporary glitch and my apologies for (probably) a false alarm.

I was actually just testing a blind change (since I can't reproduce it) - it's likely that fixed it. Was going to give you a shout, but...hey, let's just pretend none of this happened, eh?

Newer versions of the Chromium rendering engine seem to be badly, badly broken when it comes to position inheritance. Fortunately, explicitly specifying the position attribute doesn't seem to hurt other browsers, so it's not a dangerous change. It's just annoying :(

It happened again on the same thread. Refreshing fixed it. I'm not going to let it worry me (or you) too much if pressing F5 solves it.

    Ads are now in the sidebar! Nice work @digitalscream ;

  • In fact, with some insanely lucky guesswork, I've fixed it.

Suck it, Google and your amateur-hour bullshit.
    Great job!

I’ve just started getting the huge ads on the left hand side which obscures most of the screen on my iPhone. Not had any trouble before until yesterday. Never had the need to use the mobile site previously as it’s a bit sh#t compared to the full site.

I forgot I started this thread. I’ve never quite got it working properly still, unfortunately. I’ve kind of stopped reading the site now as I can’t get on with the mobile version.

Yes the mobile version is very dated isn’t it.

I'll be honest...I can't really afford any more time to look at fixing this, because it's an endless journey of chasing browser rendering bugs - that time's much better spent getting the new software working.

The mobile experience is already much improved in the new version:

In the portrait view, the three-bars menu brings up the sidebar, so you can have it either way. There's also, as you might glean, a properly-working light and dark mode which respects the device settings by default.

Is the updated mobile version in the works? Mine is still the same format as it has been for quite a while.

It's part of the new software I'm working on. At a tentative guess, I'd say it's a couple of months away depending on how much spare time I get.

Ok, thanks! It sounds really good. Sorry to hear it’s so much work though.

Well, that's life; I wanted to update the forum to modern tech, but modern forums (like Discourse) are such a wildly different experience that the majority of the forum's members would end up either asking for support or simply going elsewhere. The only alternative, therefore, was to write a forum from scratch myself.

The good news is that the new version will be much more maintainable, because I've built it specifically for our requirements - no additional fluff, no features we have to work around, and no shit code.

Well I’m happy to put up with it until the new version appears.
