Simple - one warning then throw them out.
When Fripp decided to reform/recruit a lineup of King Crimson in 2016(?) to play a few gigs in the US with no promise of coming to Europe, or paying any new material,  I decided this might be his last hurrah and put together a holiday in New York around the NY gig so I could see him one last time.

At the gig, just before the band came on, the venue played a recording of RF explaining that photography or recording was not allowed and would result in being ejected. People did. The staff threw them out. I approved.

Unfortunately, I think we know the answer to that one!

The worst example of both the talking and drinking I’ve seen recently was Manics in Swansea, too many people who just fancied a night out and a belt along to ‘A Design for Life’ and just f’d around through everything else.
    Music tourists!

I was gifted a ticket to see the Manics at Leicester DeMontfort Hall by a casual acquaintance many years ago.  I went along with him, his wife and a couple of their friends.

The Manics were supported by Wolf Alice who weren't particularly well known at the time, but I was keen to see.  They fired up, but my party completely ignored them, instead choosing to stay in the separate bar area rather than take their seats.  I felt obliged to do the same, but it really annoyed me.

They had a history of going to big gigs (U2, Coldplay etc) but seemingly just wanted to brag about having been and then put the photos up on Facebook, rather than any genuine interest in the bands.  I know that their money is as good as anyone else's, but the attitude to the artists was really poor.  I just don't get it.

I remember going to see Paranormal Activity with 2 other guys in what looks like 2007. I didn't really know one of them so my friend sat in the middle and as it went on he was getting fuming mad cos this guy was texting his girlfriend the entire time, didn't look at the screen once. He finally said something and asked him to stop, but he just laughed, said no and carried on.

Some people are just ignorant cunts and unfortunately there's a lot more to do on phones these days than just text messages, so even someone who has no mates left cos of stuff like the above can still ruin it for others.
I honestly think they're one of the worst things to ever be invented in the sense of what it's done for society. They're obviously amazing, but some can't even drive a car without looking at them.

I went to the book of Mormon with my wife and her family. Two people drinking throughout in front of us, quite disorderly, loud, etc. At one point I asked them to keep it down because I wanted to watch the show and one of them offered me out.
He was also told by a steward to keep quiet and, afterwards, I saw him in the lobby. He was so out of it I don't think he recognised me. Why waste an evening, time, energy and money like that I don't know.

One of the best things about going to the Classic Rock Show gig the other day was as it was mostly boomers or Gen X there to see it only about 2 people filmed stuff and everyone else was there to enjoy it and be in the moment.

When I went to see Ball and Boe (and yes I've also mentioned Billy Ocean, Heather Small and The Jonas Brothers on here today) there were two ladies sat in front of us. They had a copy of the set list and had underlined a few songs they wanted to hear. Once they'd heard those they left. Now we had cheap tickets and maybe they did but if they didn't they had a £100+ night out just to hear Michael Ball murder a couple of songs from Les Miserables.
Certainly at other gigs loud talkers or people watching the entire event through their phones really piss me off. A phone screen in a darkened room held three feet in front of you is incredibly distracting.
Reminded me of my aunt who goes on cruises 3 times a year and sort of crosses places off her make people jealous list that she has visited without taking more than about 1hr off the boat for a photo op then back to her cabin.

Wasn’t crowd behaviour the reason that Pete Townsend asked Jim Marshall to build a 100w stack?

I was just going to say that. 100W Marshall and two cabs solves all this!

I think there is a degree of context involved here - if you are playing in a corner of the dog and ferret which has a host of regulars who haven't come for the music, then I wouldn't expect them to sit in silence throughout. They are probably complaining about the amount of noise interrupting their conversation!

I remember reading that Don McLean would play American Pie first, then tell the audience that if they only came to hear that song, they could leave now, and the people who were actually fans could stay to hear the rest of the set.

Yeah, it’s annoying. I went to a small local Sunday afternoon gig a few weeks ago and one of the band ended up asking people to stop. The gig was in a place where there are multiple pubs within a stone’s throw, and only this one has live music, so why not fuck off to one of the other ones if you don’t want to watch/listen to. Disrespectful to the artists, and inconsiderate of anyone wanting to watch. Cunts.

On the disrespect angle rather than the talking angle - I was at a gig last night and the support band got a big cheer from one bloke when they announced they only had one more song left. Admittedly, they weren't great (awful, to be honest), but that seemed a bit over the top

I have a button on my pedalboard that makes my guitar louder than anything in the surrounding county, that usually does the trick

Doesn't metal have the much, much worse problem of people "killing" in crowds (or whatever it's called - deliberately trying to properly hurt people in mosh pits?)
I must be a narcissist, God knows that I can't resist, to make a song and dance about it?

  • 'John Martyn's best put down of the night was aimed at a woman constantly talking loudly in the audience, and I quote: "Look, I've got a 2000 watt PA here and I still can't hear myself for you talking, so shut up. If my wallet was as big as your mouth, I'd be the richest c*** in Hastings."'

  • I personally don’t think any artist has a right to people’s undivided attention.  You have to earn that by being good enough that they don’t want to concentrate on anything else
