It is still possible to join tFB without paying, correct?

Recently I saw a WTB post on a Facebook group, for a guitar I know is for sale here - so I replied with a link to the thread and suggested they join.

They're saying that they can't sign in to message the seller, and instead see a page which asks for credit card details to "access special offers".

AFAIK it's possible to create an account here, including classified access and messages, without paying - as long as you accept the ads. Is that still correct?

It is correct. Have a quick look at the sticky topic at the top of the Recent Discussions page as it explains what benefits you get from subscribing over just signing up like on any other forum.

By the way, welcome, and I hope you manage to get the guitar of your dreams.

It sounds to me as though the person to whom you sent the link has a malicious URL redirect "virus" on their computer or phone, or else the link you gave was somehow malformed and took him to a search page where he found some other site that he thought was the forum.

It's possible they may have seen and clicked an ad, but that's a bit of a reach.

There has never been a charge for entry here, and the subscriptions are entirely optional. It's possible that selling high-value items may become a subscription-only feature in the future, but that's some way off at this point.

Thanks all. I'll reply back to confirm that membership here is free. I've also notified the seller here, so maybe he can reach out to the buyer and make contact that way round.

Not only is membership free but tFB is a source of great advice and an oasis of calm in a slightly batty world.

    Great moderation team.
