Angels by Robbie Williams just came on my all-time greats playlist. Absolutely brilliant song and a fantastic bit of slide playing

I suppose a grey line as to define what is pop - I would agree that Rosanna is pop - My definition would be based on released as a single with R1 and/or R2 playtime - Other similar radio stations available
In which case Whisky in the Jar by Thin Lizzy is an option and of course Bohemian Rhapsody
Along with Enter Sandman and Run To The Hills which were both in the Top Ten, and Symphony of Destruction which was top twenty, and all played on Radio One
Don’t forget Killing in the Name Of!!
That's my favourite solo to play live

Dead easy to play but the brief think it's hard, so you can ham up your rock star moves and feel like a guitar god, reinforced by the crowd going crazy as you do it

I miss the band I used to play that in. So much fun

Another Girl, Another Planet by The Only Ones?

Or is that stretching the definition pop again…
Don't ask me, I just play the damned thing...

The only slide I've ever really attempted to play because the band did the song. I love it; there are also some tasty slide licks in the second and last choruses (about 2:17 in the following video).

(Actually we also do Stay With Me but the point remains I've played slide for about 5 hours in my life, hence slapdash string muting which will always haunt me because when we recorded this song it was the first time I'd ever recorded slide and we didn't have much time left and it was good enough and and and bottom line is I'm a lazy musician, sigh.)

You see I can play any rock or indie or classic rock solo - but I find sitting down and learning classic pop guitar solos much much more interesting.

I would be quite cheeky (if someone hasn't said it already) and say any Richie Sambora solo on a Bon Jovi track. Bon Jon was always more pop than rock. Sambora has some AMAZING solos.

    And from the 90s:

    Santana on Smooth

And Slash's best guitar work outside of Appetite and UYI: Michael Jackson's Give in to Me. The outro is unreal, though I'm sure it's probably a composite of different takes

Another 90s "pop" song (is it indie?). This is a SERIOUSLY good solo:

The Spin Doctors: Two Princes. Go learn this one!

Keith Scott on Everything I Do is THE pop guitar solo of all time. He’s a certified grade a genius. Easy Like A Sunday Morning runs it a close second in my book.

Thousands of others share 3rd place.

I don’t think it’s pop but it’s one of the best solos of the 90s

and along similar “is it pop?” line… Sheryl Crowe’s If It Makes You Happy, and Joan Armstrong’s One of Us

  • A few I always enjoy off the top of my head etc.
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits - Mark Knopfler
Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne - Larry Carlton
Free - Alright Now - Paul Kossoff
Randy Crawford - You might need Somebody - Steve Lukather
Badge - Cream - Eric Clapton.
Can’t buy me love - George Harrison
Rambling Man - Allman Bros - Dicky Betts
loads and loads more . Some fairly simple some very difficult. To me its the effect that the Solo has on the listener in the context of the Song that I look for.

Always a fan of Graeme Kelling's(RIP) guitar work on Deacon Blue's early records. Try Loves Great Fears off Raintown for a good pop solo.
The obvious Cutting Crew Died in Your Arms Tonight solo is another. Francis Dunnery It Bites Calling All The Heroes etc.

Unlike Angels, I would not be so brave as to post my attempt at the second Dry County solo. I must get back to that one, it's been about five years and every few months I have a go and give up..

Okay, fudge it. Perhaps if I post this it will make me more accountable (and once I can play the thing I'll do a recording, this sound is the phone mic compressing the room sound to crap).
