City Boy - 5.7.0.5. with Mike Slamer on guitar.

Mike Slamer is a monster player that deserves far greater recognition.
He is and yes he does, but he's always played on stuff which hasn't exactly set the charts alight

Pink Pony Club has some great 80s guitar happening towards its end.

Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Come up and see me - Jim Cregan on guitar

Jim did a few nice solos on Rod Stewart songs back in the day

Not exactly a pop hit, but to all intents and purposes a moderately successful 80's indie dance pop tune with a cool guitar solo just before the bridge. The guitar solo was played by William Orbit apparently, so it's definitely linked to mega mainstream pop.

There’s the two recent ones that everyone mentions:

Pink Pony Club by Chappell Roan
    https://youtu.be/GR3Liudev18?si=f0MmZh6M2YcuUoxH

bad idea right? by Olivia Rodrigo
    https://youtu.be/Dj9qJsJTsjQ?si=2t_1H-B1r0Z8b70K

I think that a fair amount of older Taylor Swift has good solos. Not shredding but fitting the vibe of the song well. Enchanted and Starlight come to mind first.

And I know there'll be loads of much more technically impressive solos in this thread. But that one is a classic because of the way it serves the song and its brilliant execution - that dive bomb at the end is perfection.

Isn't he the guy that ghost-played on loads of Beau Hill produced 80s Rock albums? Like Warrant's first couple of albums?

Yes, he played a lot of solos on the first two Warrant albums.  I don't really know about other artists, except he played on an album by Fiona which Beau Hill produced.  Reb Beach also played on that album, and did uncredited session work for Beau Hill.

Here's a YouTube clip where Joey Allen from Warrant goes through what he (and/or Erik Turner) played and what Mike played.  Joey took guitar lessons from Mike for some time.

    Animotion - "Obsession"

Not really a guitar solo, but it's got some kick-ass lead playing, with a great '80s lead sound.

Oooh Hollie Knight wrote this with Michael Des Barres  Hollie knight is awesome

There's a clip on YouTube of Linda Rhonstadt doing 'You're No Good", and he's on guitar. He lets rip with a fantastic solo.

@Grunfeld yeah played it a few times this week, hadn’t listened to it for ages but just great songwriting.

It’s also Ed on the beginning of Close But No Cigar!
