Despite his massive roles in apocalypse now and the godfather it will always be as Harry in Days of Thunder that I will remember him as it was my earliest memory of him.

In the Godfather for me. But a long career so probably lots of things that I saw that haven't yet come to mind. RIP.

He also did a wee thing in Scotland with Rangers man Ally McCoist  and apparently they kept in touch

I always think of THX 1138 when I see him mentioned, although I'm not a massive fan of the film.

I was going to say he was one of those character actors who was often better than the films may have deserved, but in fact he didn't actually appear in many only-here-for-the-paycheck roles.  A very distinguished career.

    RIP

Aww that's a shame. Such a talented actor. I always felt he brought a real authenticity to his roles.
I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

No, that was Dennis Hopper. Also in Apocalypse Now.

    Hahaha

I was going to comment that I see A Shot At Glory is missing from his obituary on the BBC website. That's not surprising as his Scottish accent was beyond abysmal and McCoist did a better job of acting than him!

    Still a legend though. RIP

Just a brilliant actor. I've never seen a bad performance from him.
My personal favourites were him as Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now,
    Boss Spearman in Open Range
and as Augustus McCrae in Lonesome Dove.
His passing is just the end of an era.
RIP Robert and thank you so much for such wonderful work.

Yeah, for a minute I was thinking he was in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.  But that was also Dennis Hopper.

I do think his best part was Tom Hagen - a more subtle performance than Pacino, Brando etc, but more chilling in its own way.

'The Eagle Has Landed' was partly filmed at Charlestown near where we lived. My dad saw Duvall standing about while they were both on their lunch break.
