What's Hot

Hi everyone,

A couple of months ago @Leisceoir was kind enough to post my little gig finder website on this forum.

There was some nice feedback, and a couple of feature requests, specifically to show gigs further into the future (rather than just a 7 day lookahead) and to add some images.

I'm happy to say that both of these features have now been implemented, and I've also added map.

It's https://whirligig.live/ for anyone who might be interested. A small warning that once you click "show gigs", it will play audio by default (though you can click the mute icon).

I hope that people find it fun and/or useful!

Cheers,

whirligig

Brilliant @whirligig - the one month look ahead is really useful and seeing an image of the band works really well too. Do you have a Paetron account or something so I can send you a few quid for a well deserved couple of beers?

    Great idea, well done :+1:
Must admit that the play audio by default is possibly not the best feature, as I want to look up a list of who's playing at what venues in an area, not immediately have random stuff served to me at volume  ;)

@Kittyfrisk that's good feedback, thank you. I've been on the fence about this issue for a while but have decided to change the default based on your comment. (Originally, I didn't want people to miss the main feature of the whole site, but I think the flashing unmute button is quite noticeable now.)

    @Leisceoir that's very kind of you indeed - I'm at https://buymeacoffee.com/whirligig :)

Hope you continue to enjoy the site - future planned features are adding more tracks per artist, and linking off to other streaming platforms (Spotify, YouTube Music etc.)

Nice one – works very smoothly and looks great.

Two bits of additional functionality I think people might appreciate:

    – a 'select all' option for the dates, making it a bit easier to browse what's coming up for the entire month.
    – an option to select venues by region or 'distance from'. Don't know how hard that would be to implement, though.

Biggest potential frustration I can see is that it shows gigs that are already sold out, but it'll be a great tool for people who live in places where there are lots of small venues where getting a ticket at short notice generally isn't a problem.

@barnstorm thank you. I've just added a 'select all', hope it helps!

As for 'distance from' - do you want to be able to drop a pin on a map and then have a slider to increase / decrease radius?

I'll look into detecting sold out shows and flagging them as such also.

Thanks again for taking the time to provide feedback.

What a great idea - I had a quick play with it and discovered venues close to me that I didn't even know existed!

    That was fast!

Re. distance, that would be a great way of doing it, but if it's any easier it could be postcode plus dropdown as on eBay, for example.

(It may not be worth the hassle at all if the vast majority of searches come from people in big cities. Just typing in 'London' or 'Manchester' is obviously going to give you a heap of options to check out.

If you're somewhere smaller, though, and don't fancy getting on the train, you currently have to do several separate searches to find out if anything of interest is happening near you. E.g. from where I am it would be no big deal to drive to a gig in/around any of Milton Keynes, Bedford, Cambridge, Northampton, Luton, Stevenage, St Albans.)

@barnstorm thanks again for the feedback. You're not the first person who has asked about a "near me" feature, and since I want the solution to work for different countries (whirligig has 5 currently), I think I'm going to do a map plus slider. Give me a day or two and I'll tag you in this thread when it's ready !
