Songs That Bring A Tear To Your Eye

What's Hot

One of mine popped up on a playlist this morning... Baby Can I Hold You Tonight by Tracey Chapman.  Cue a sudden bout of hay fever.

The other one is I'll See You In My Dreams by Joe Brown, most particularly as performed at the Concert For George.  I wasn't just moist-eyed, I was bawling the buggers out.

Any still get you despite familiarity and the passing of the years?

Back to the Old House by the Smiths.  It's really bleak. For some reason I can be in a great mood, I hear that and immediately feel absolutely gutted about everything.

Robert Wyatt - Sea Song, The opener from Rock Bottom, which as you all know, was written by Robert BEFORE he got drunk and fell out of window breaking his back. The album reflects the helplessness and despair of his situation and his rescue from oblivion by his wife Alfie. I'm not your larder.

The key change at the end of sea song sends me over the edge. Ready for what's to come..... Harrowing, yet beautiful. Partly fish, Partly Porpoise, Partly baby sperm whale. Am i yours? Are you mine, to play with? your lunacy fits nicely with my own. With my own.........

Never any good by Martin Simpson.
I can listen to it now without blubbing, but it used to really tug at the emotions.

The chorus lyrics just hit home. At times it’s like looking in a mirror- an alt universe mirror maybe but the ethos feels so strong.

“You were never any good with money,
you couldn’t even hold a job,
not steady enough for the office,
not hard enough for the hod.
You’d rather be riding your Norton,
or fishing with your split cane rod,
you were never any good with money,
you couldn’t even hold a job.”

That song makes me think of a childhood autumn in Norfolk, burning leaves in the garden with my dear old Dad.

It gives me feelings of nostalgia and melancholy but also peace and acceptance. 'What will be will be.'

    So many.
The one I usually reference is 'Roads' by Portishead as it not only made me cry when I heard it on the album, but also brought me to tears when I saw them play it live.

And this one - Ballad by New Model Army. Bleak, prophetic, devastating. Can't believe it was written 30 years ago and it's more true than ever. Gutting really.

For some reason I got a tear in my eye listening to the version of Daydream on Robin Trower Live the other day.  Which was slightly embarrassing as I was in Sainsbury's at the time.

Cast Iron Skillet by Jason Isbell. The way the heavy lyrics sit alongside much lighter ones makes them hit harder.
This bit gets me every time:

    Jamie found a boyfriend
With smiling eyes and dark skin
And her daddy never spoke another word to her again

It's interesting that lots of you are able to enjoy melancholy songs. The music that can make me mist up tends to be triumphal or at least defiant.

I think the closest things to the stuff other people are suggesting are The Road by Emmylou Harris, which isn't entirely a sad song; and Transcendental Reunion by Mary Chapin Carpenter, which just does a really good job of describing air travel (and why we tolerate it when it's so shit).

Lyrics never move me that way, but sometimes the beauty of music does. There are two on the same album that get me every time, from Genesis Selling England by the pound - my fave album ever. First off is Steve Hacketts solo on Firth of fifth. It has a beautiful, yearning quality like no other solo, and the way it gently comes down and fades from the earlier intensity is just beautiful. The other one is Tony Banks extended keyboard solo on Cinema show. It's not as flashy as some prog solos, but the melody is a thing of beauty, juxtaposed against Phil Collins superb drumming. The point later on where it goes from some quick arpeggios back into the amazing melody gets me every time.

    • The Last Post with the rich notes from that solitary bugle drifting away on the breeze.
    • Remembrance Day - Bryan Adams
    • Brothes In Arms - Dire Straits
    • Mama (Afraid to Say Goodbye) -Lynyrd Skynyrd
    • 'Til You're Home - Rita Wilson, Sebastián Yatra version (from soundtrack of the Movie A Man Called Otto).  The David Hodges acoustic mix is good also.

Rosé - The Feeling "especially today" (RIP Mick)

    Ten Years Gone - Zeppelin

Martha My Dear - Beatles - specifically the change into the "Take a good look around you" section, which hits me like a train every time.
