How 'well rounded' are you

What's Hot
not as in 'heavy' but what are your interests apart from music?  Drumming is included in music.

Me?  I like golf but am shorter off the tee now than ten years ago.  I treat all Par 4s as three shotters these days.  But there is nothing on earth to compare to the feeling of the purity of a good hit with an 8 iron.  And I am a reasonable putter.  And a sucker for the latest shot saving gadget......

I am a canal and railway enthusiast.  Not train spotting but studying the railway and canal lines, bridges, harbours, stations etc.  One hundred years ago in Ireland there were many railway companies with lines going everywhere.  Now the network is much smaller yet it is interesting to look at old embankments where engineers built railways to open up the country.  I plan to travel every metre of track in Ireland before it is all gone.  Canals are even more interesting, these were the motorways of a couple of hundred years ago.  And the canal boats were the juggernauts of the day.  Locks and bridges were built to last in those days, every one slightly different but essentially the same.  Masons built them by hand, the canals were dug out totally by hand [by laborers who were called Navies], no mechanical excavators in those days.

I enjoy theatre.  Nothing like being close to the action.  It is real, living, breathing drama.  Oscar Wilde, Shaw, Sheridan etc.  What treasure.

Photography.  Getting back into this activity, now digital.  I was a serious B&W photographer many years ago.  Failing eyesight was the reason I sold all my kit which included darkroom equipment and my 645 camera.

So what are your interests apart from music?
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. [Albert Einstein]

I don't do any sport these days, but I was a decent cricketer when I was younger.

Literature is my other great love, after music. My main speciality is Wells, but also the Romantic Poets, Austen and Hardy.

I also like theatre, especially Beckett.

    SF and horror movies.

    And cheeseburgers: lots of cheeseburgers.

I used to like photography. Still got my late father's development tank, enlarger, and other kit. Would love to get it out and use it again.

I used to like motorbikes but when things turned out that (a) I could afford only 1 vehicle so it had to be something that I could chuck stuff in the back of (b) I got too fat for my levvers the bikes went.

I live with a cat, and try to keep up a relationship with the gf. And my software engineering job is absorbing and interesting.

tbh, I find it hard to spare the time for music after a day's work, more interests besides music would spread me far too thin.

edit: I think if I have any well roundedness it comes from an appreciation of electronics, the technical aspects of recording and sound engineering, and the ability to teach music on the guitar

Woodwork and generally building shit. I'll be moving into scratch builds as soon as I get the space.

Our band. Obviously. Great gig last night at a motorcycle gentlemens 'do' at an airfield in a hangar, with free band beer! Hurrah!

    Love reading, pref' non-fiction.

Keeping me kids busy, and keeping up with me wife.

WTF happened to me photo? Jesus.

  • My answer would have to be "not very" - I enjoy both playing and listening to music, but that's really all I do which isn't work on a regular basis.

"Watching TV" doesn't exactly count, and I barely even have time to read any more. I suppose you might count "eating out" because we've got a bit of a habit for finding interesting restaurants making interesting food, but even that's a bit of a stretch.

    Boo.

I guess guitar building falls into 'music' so I can't count that.

My main interest outside of music is science/skepticism.
I'm also into fitness (cycling, running, weight lifting), nutrition and such, also MMA & cage fighting- I do judo and karate and I used to do jujitsu and we go rambling quite a bit too. A fair amount of this has been scuppered in the last few years as I've had a bunch of operations on my hands, and shoulders- I'm getting my fitness back now.

I like my cars, I like to travel, have lived all over the world, I'm interested in history and technology/computers.
TV is mostly sci-fi and science based and history stuff too.
We have an English bulldog and go to meetups with other bulldogs and their owners.

I am not remotely interested in literature though, at least not these days- I read a lot but I stick wholly to non-fiction.

I play drums and bass as well as guitar.
I program professionally, but also for pleasure (this place for example :D

My background is broadcast engineering and I love radio especially (Radio 4 FTW)

I used to be quite into Philosophy, but that's declined somewhat of late. I still read a lot of science, especially physics and psychology.

I really like walking and I usually go to the Lakes once or twice a year.

I used to watch a lot of TV and Films, but I don't find it holds my attention anymore.

I also game when time allows. Mostly 3rd person action games and strictly offline only.

But as someone else mentioned with an 8 month old daughter even doing music requires dedication.

  • I keep reptiles, 3 bearded dragons to be precise. They're very critical of my guitar noodling which is nice.
I also dabble in photography when I get the chance.

I'm not sure gaming counts as a hobby as it's my alternative to watching TV.

I garden, take gentle cycle rides, I am fascinated by aviation history living close to the original Aircraft armement testing establishment, Felixstowe seaplane base, Orford bombing range and Bawdsey home of radar and surrounded by dozens of former airfields means there is plenty of material. I like to make or mend things and joinery is a hobby. I like to maintain my own vehicle(s).

  • I love my footy. I've followed Brentford for over thirty five years, up and down the country and visited 78 others grounds with the Bees. My nine year old son is showing promise as a player and is now training with a Conference team with interest from two Championship clubs as well.
I'm quite into cinema - particularly when I can go on my own, during the day when there's no idiots about.

Fortunately, proper work, KaBL and DJing keep me busy the rest of the time.

  • I like socialising, cinema-going, reading, gaming, watching sports and listening to music. So basically I put "none" in the hobby section of dating websites.

    Not really.

I do art, leathercraft, larping (and associated kit-making), homebrew, pen-and-paper roleplaying, indian and japanese cookery, sewing/embroidery and learning languages (badly). I've just taken up wood carving, but I'm struggling with it. My small flat is a bit of a mess, really.

this is kinda related to larping, I've always fancied having a go at historical re-enactment, never found the time though. It looks like a good excuse to go away for a weekend, dress up like a pillock and drink loads of beer in convivial company.

interest wise, I'm into gardening (vege growing) and related small holding activities hedgelaying, tree felling, DIY, homebrewing, bread baking, preserving etc.), I also hunt and when I get round to it, fishing. Not sure if these count as interests though.

I'm a bit of a history buff, mostly interested in rural history. Also interested in agro-ecology, land reform, economic justice and praying for the end of the world.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.
