  • They interviewed a UK expert* on these drone systems on Radio 4 yesterday. Amazon saying 5 years is very optimistic - the technology just hasn't gotten that close yet and there are numerous practical and legal problems to overcome to make it at all workable. Just a bit of puff for Cyber Monday.

*I'm assuming Radio 4 did their homework right and he is an expert, sounded a bit shakey to me.

  • I'm not believing it.

They say it's for delivering within 30 minutes of ordering. So, the item you want will have to be in a warehouse in your immediate local area - they'll have to pick it first so the travel time will need to be less than 30 minutes.

Even in the UK which is a small landmass, it would be a major logistical task to have a full range of <2.3kg items stocked in every local area. The cost to have the stock would be extremely high too.

In the US this would be several orders of magnitude higher.

Having watched the Panorama undercover "expose" about how Amazon's distribution & picking warehouses work, I'd have thought that they have other areas of their processes that would be more deserving of improvement.
