I've got calluses! WTF?

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years and I remember getting calluses on my fingertips after the first month.

They eventually went away and that was the end of it but over the last two weeks I've developed them on the index, middle and ring fingers of my left (fingering) hand.

I've spent tonight chewing them off which was probably stupid but today it's felt like I've had superglue on my fingertips and they were pissing me off.

I wonder what's triggered them again after all these years?

Have you started playing more frequently? Or stopped for a few weeks, now come back to the guitar again? Same thing happened to me a while ago 'cos of exactly that...

Not played regularly for a while now, off and on for the past few years.

Played more in the last month right enough, but not enough to do this as far as I'm concerned.

Could be wrong though.

Didn't you mention you were playing acoustic more often these days?

Maybe it's just a natural reaction to the heavier strings...

Yeah, but I've been more of an acoustic guy for the last 18 months.

I have been playing a lot (by my standards) in the last month so yeah it could well be the acoustic gauge.
