Del Amitri

Went to see them last night. All I can say is wow.

Been a fan for ever but never got to go see them the first time round. Justin Currie still has the voice, Iain Harvey still has that tash and the band were tighter than a nats bum! 2 hour set and everyone in the sold out room knew every word to every song. The support band were fantastic too. Couple of guys from Texas called The O's and they filled the room with sound.

If you can, go and see them. Best gig in a long while!

I used to get my hair cut by the same woman that did Justin's.

    :)

    Great band.

  • Saw Justin Currie on an a BBC4 song writers circle a while back (IIRC Neil Finn and Chris Difford were on the same one). He was really good. Always had a soft spot for Del Amitri.

  • Saw them long, long time ago. Very good as I recall.

I saw them at Manchester Apollo on Saturday night and they were terrific.

Last saw them at the (smaller) Academy in 2002 when they were pretty much on their last legs, so was fascinated to see what turnout there would be at the 3,000 capacity Apollo, particularly as decent tickets were a shocking £50 including booking fees, and it was full from what I could tell.  Very appreciative crowd, that went predictably nuts for the 'Angry from Manchester' line in Nothing Ever Happens.

I've seen Justin Currie solo a couple of times over the last 12 months (again stretching it a tad at £20 per ticket) and he is very good indeed.  The only minor grumbles I had with Saturday's gig are that there was way too much instrument swapping than seemed necessary (three of them played bass at different times during the night) and Iain Harvie seemed very anonymous most of the night, being very much overshadowed by the other guitarist (whose name escapes me), and didn't mind being in the background.  Bit odd given that he and Currie are the only two members most folk remember, and that theirs are the only faces on all the tour promo posters and T-shirts etc.

Other than that, faultless, and a reminder of what a superb band they are with an enviable back catalogue of significant pop/rock hits.

  • listen to their songs, they are great songs, some of the "sounds" and styles of them are a little dated now, but I'd love to see them re-record some of the classics with some sounds and production more suited to today.
