The greatest thing about this piece of advice is it's versatility. I know it refers specifically to the toe but I would imagine it could be applied to pretty much any bodily part. Top tip.

hmmm, good practise says you would not have your foot under something that heavy. Something that heavy drops on your foot it will squash it flat, steel toe cap or not. As I said, I had a motorised pallet truck fall on my foot, but as we used good practice it was only an inch or so from the ground. The toe cap took the weight, without it I'd have lost toes.
EDIT: I would argue that the position you are putting forwards is unprovable in that there's no way to compare damage caused by wearing toe caps as opposed to not.

I recall hearing the same story about caps shearing off toes when I was a young engineer. At the time I didn't question it, but logically it makes no sense.
yeah, when I was at ashridge I had to lead walks I would take mine off and put on walking boots, still hate wearing them if I'm walking any distance.
EDIT and for real discomfort try wearing chainsaw boots.
