Stored in a cupboard or under a bed/on top of the wardrobe ...could be absolutely fine

I recently realised that my parents, who are getting on a bit, had a whole house full of alcohol that they hadn't touched for 25 years. I'm talking about a lot, maybe a couple of hundred bottles. They don't have a cellar so it was stored in far from ideal temperatures. We ended up pouring every bottle of wine away, after trying a lot of them. All the spirits were fine though so I liberated about a dozen single malts and bottles of brandy. It turns out that a 12 year-old Scotch remains 12 years old no matter how long you keep it.
