I wondered if some of you may find this interesting.
The principle behind the FX loop is of course to place modulation effects as late as possible in the signal chain. And since many of us generate overdrive with pedals and / preamp it tends to work fairly well.
I watched Larry Carlton however, place his modulation effects after the speaker. That allows one to keep the guitar - preamp - power amp - speaker chain pure. So I came up with this:
Put a microphone in front of the speaker. A 'side address' dynamic like a Sennheiser e609 or 906 is nice so you can 'hang it' and it points at the speaker rather than the floor (no need for a space occupying stand).
That runs that to a TC Electronic G natural processor (Microphone input, reverb, delay, chorus, tap tempo).
100% wet effects go from its R & L stereo outputs to a pair of stereo active full-range speakers on either side of my 1×12.
Stereo Chorus, Delay, and Reverb - applied after the speaker, just like when recording.
I haven’t found anything else that comes even close.
