FWIIW, the midrange scoop can be cured by the simple expedient of changing the bar magnet from A5 to A4.
Well, it does purport to replicate a pickup design originally intended to suit Jazz guitars. It is supposed to have the metal cover on it and the polepiece screws are supposed to be adjusted upwards to compensate for output imbalances from string to string.
I would not be surprised if at least one of your '59N owner friends has all six polepiece screws set almost as low as they will go and with the slots all aligned perpendicular to the string path.
