Can anyone explain this progression?

This is from a Grade 8 piece. I think I understand it but wanted to check a few things...

Section 1

Bm7b5 - E7b9- Am7 - D7b9 - Fma9 to Gm7 - C7b9 - Fmaj7

I see 2x II V Im first 3 chords and the last 3. What’s the function of D7b9 and Fmaj9??

in the next section is where my head hurts.

from Fmaj7 - Am7 - Dm9 - Dm7 -Ab - Bb - Gm - Abmaj7 - Am7b5 - D7b9 then resolves to G for the next section.

So I - III - VI (F) modulates to (Eb Major) IV - V - III - IV - so Ab Lydian sound

then II - V - I In G?

It rather depends on the rhythm and the melody as to where home is and where the modulations are, but like you say, the first bit is back-cycling through the circle of 5ths (including the D chord), with that odd Fmaj9 in the middle, which seems like it’s probably a passing chord on the way to the G). That’s why you can see the 251s. But we’d need to see the rhythm and melody if there is any.

The 2nd one starts either in F or Dm, then has that odd bit which I guess is in Ab lyd or Bb mixo, though again is there a tune on top? And then yep a 251 in G.

Can you post the sheet music?

    Sorry with the delay!

Also modes on the solo would be mostly G major Scale/C lydian from bars 91-98

    Then bar 99-100 C Dorian

    Then bar 105 - 108 improvise guitar melody. Gmaj7 - Bbmaj7 - G major scale/ Bb major Scale ??

Yes, so the first section is just cycling back through the circle of 5ths - ie going up a 4th, down a 5th, up a 4th, down a 5th, etc, all in the minor keys. (So the dominants have major 3rds but flat 9s). As I suspected that Fmaj7 is just a passing chord.
