Going cheap!
Covers a really wide gain range. Personally I actually prefer the Warthog but I would class that as more of a distortion pedal

If you need minimal gain and just a little push as well as thickening up the sound, an Xotic EP Boost or TC Spark Boost would be good, too.
Been uploading old tracks I recorded ages ago and hopefully some new noodles here.

TBH I still can't get my head around overdrive. A lot of the drive I hear and play is actually more to do with pick attack, especially on the blues greats and surprisingly with Hendrix too.
I was wondering whether a pedal like Thorpy's Peacekeeper might offer what you're after.
An honourable mention should also go to Hamstead Odyssey. A very very good pedal that has kind of dropped off the radar here.
If you've got the cash, I have a VL effects Jimi Black. Paired with a Marshall it's incredible.
Didn't you have a Veteran mgaw? That should have done the trick. Or is the clipping you're after? If so, the Odyssey would work. BTW, it has the best clean boost ever. I wish that pedal had two switches.
Not losing sparkle when you turn down can simply be case of dialling in your tone with your guitar tone control at 50-60% so you can add it back in as you turn the volume down.
Whilst @ICBM is correct that all drive pedals will clean up from the volume knob, there’s definitely a spectrum of how they respond. By far the most responsive I’ve ever used was a Lovepedal Woodrow, which went from screaming tweed deluxe to absolutely not being there at all within a third of a turn of the volume knob. Another great one is the Keeley modded BD-2 (or maybe a normal BD-2...I’ve just never used one of those) Others I’ve had, like Tubescreamers, do clean up but go into sock mode very quickly in the process.
The Royal Blue is explicitly designed to retain brightness in the way that a fuzz face or similar does, and it does it in a similar way (impedance, etc).
It's a lovely sounding pedal, too. I got rid of mine because I had something self-built that was similar, and I wanted to redirect the cash to something else, but I was very happy with the pedal itself.
