For me Prometheus was just 'OK', it wasn't bad but it could have been a lot better. I was really looking forward to Covenant but I think the story writers dropped the ball, but they dropped it in Prometheus and it was too late to go and fetch it in Covenant.
David as the creator of the facehugger/xenomorph is weak and the ending was predictable. I was hoping that the AVP films tied in at least canonically and the xenomorphs were an ancient alien species and not the creation of a mad robot.
The original Alien films were great. Alien was way ahead of it's time and Aliens worked well too. I wasn't a fan of Alien 3 but quite liked Resurrection and IMHO they should have left it there.
But as Mel Brooks coined in Spaceballs, "God willing we'll all meet in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money".

But it's an in-cannon direct prequel to Alien: Covenant which is itself a direct prequel to whatever the 3rd film will be called which is the direct prequel to Alien - But they did cannonically kill off AvP and AvP2 ...
Hope that clarifies the use of the Alien name
Sure, it doesn't have the mystery-horror aura to it like the 1st 'Alien'' but it was quite all right comparing to ''AvP'' or ''Resurrection''.
But I did enjoy ''Prometheus'' as well. I like the Alien Universe and both movies were well made. Plot holes are there for sure - also stupidity of the crew is beyond imagination, but overall a good watch.
I agree to the comment re: Alien being a creature from ''Starship Troopers'' - although hungry, it didn't seem to be highly intelligent at all.
I would give it strong 6/10.

It made more sense than starting another thread to rant.
Christ knows I start enough of those.
