There are plenty of pre-owned bargains in the classified listings of this here forum. (None of them is mine, BTW!)
The longer term answer is to increase your budget to a level that buys something that you can keep with no need for modifications or upgrades.
Of the two G4M offerings, I'd go for the two pickup Seattle model.
Second hand these are dead cheap

Not expecting much tbh but worth a go at that price.
I assumed from your opening post that you sought a short scale instrument.
I've always liked the look of semi basses but they're usually more than I can justify spending - with free returns inc delivery charges I thought I might as well see what it's like.
That being said, I’m sending it back as it just didn’t suit my small frame. After I’d ordered it, I spotted a B stock Seattle short scale for £76 so took a punt on that as well. That turned up yesterday and I’m keeping it. The shorter scale definitely suits me better.
It’s a little rough around the edges, some of the pickguard screws were loose which needed filling to get a fix which I’m guessing is why it was B stock - an easy fix. The PJ pickup configuration gives plenty of variety, it’s nice and light, plays well out of the box and is more than adequate for my needs.
If if they made a short scale semi, I’d be all over it as I think it sounded a bit nicer and generally felt like a better instrument but it is double the price.
For a beginner’s bass, a back up or something to have a go at modding though, you can’t go far wrong with the Seattle.
