What's people's thoughts on epiphone, I'm looking for that gibson sound but unfortunately can't afford the gibson price tag, is a gibson worth the extra money or am I just paying for a name on the headstock? Weighing up buying an epiphone sheraton hmm

Tried one very recently. I was very impressed. Great fit and finish, played great, sounded very good (admittedly through a good tube amp). Much better than my old epi Les Paul, although I realise it is dearer.

Epis can be good but never quite as much as a gibson. Their finishes can be pretty plasticky too as befits the price point. If you want gibson quality (and better!) at a lower price then look at MIJ Tokai and Eastman.

Ask Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend  ;)
Not a guitar god perhaps, but definitely a professional musician.

Yes, I've had two over the years - never got on with them. One was a late 80's Japanese one and the other a mid-2000's Korean.

They always felt bulky and uncomfortable for some reason (yeah, I know it's a semi - it's not that!) and the necks weren't nice to play either.

Get a used Epi Dot or Hofner Verythin

I really had the horn for a Sheraton, but absolutely didn't get on with it when I tried one (admittedly only one) out in a shop. Ended up with a Guild Starfire V, although that was a fair bit more money.

Agreed, the Epi Dot is a better guitar!

I had a play on a Epi 339 - it was pretty good would consider but I've decided against semi's - still need a LP of some sort - Tokai is the way forward

    I absolutely love my Sheraton.
With the gain up and a fuzz box on they are a really lively guitar to play live.
I like it to sound something like this...

No it's not...its not anywhere in the same class.  I tried 3 Epi dots prior to buying my Sherry, and they played poorly, sounded weak, were badly set up, had uneven frets, and were poorly finished.
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

Sounds like you’re describing my old Sheraton. Also
add dodgy paint finish, some iffy binding, and very crap pickups.  I put proper Gibson pickups in mine, but still couldn’t connect with it. Moved it on quickly.

I reckon there's been a definite jump in quality with the recent MIC ones. I probably wouldnt buy a Korean one sight unseen for instance.

Might be true for Epiphone across the board though, by all account they're on point at the moment.

Very mixed reviews, I think I'll just have to try a few and see if they grab me

I’ve got a Chinese Casino and it is brilliant. I’ve heard talk of muddy P90’s but mine definitely are not. I’ve had a few Sheraton’s and they’ve all been great apart from an early 90s one that was a dog, it was the best looking one though!

Well I bit the bullet and bought a new sheraton in wine red, got to say I love it, very impressed with the look and feel, plays class straight out the box and sounds very good. There's a few tiny details that I think might not have made it past gibson QA but at a third of the price it's a beast.
