Me and Mrs Travis have been married 20 years next week so I'm taking her to NYC for 5 days.

Got loads of stuff planned but the dining seems to be a case of too much choice.

Does anyone have any favourite haunts out there in the way of bars, eateries, pizza so we can focus our efforts a little

Many thanks

Brooklyn Diner - the one nearest Central Park. Book ahead.

And Katz’s deli. It’s really expensive and we never went whilst we were there but I’ve kicked myself ever since as everyone raves about it.

Also try the little delis/dives right in the centre. They look dodgy but you’ll get some amazing food for cheaps!
    How very rock and roll

Best meal we had was Tavern On The Green in Central Park, bloody expensive but it was great food, the timing and family mood made it special though and afterwards we visited John Lennon's former home at The Dakota Building just round the corner which was a lot more of an emotional experience than I thought it would be, to stand in the archway where Mark Chapman shot John Lennon was quite harrowing.

The Loeb boathouse in Central Park, superb. It also was featured in When Harry met Sally.

Don't kick yourself too much - we were in NYC last week and all the locals said Katz's has gone downhill and is overpriced and nothing special now.

Its not fine dining but great for a beer and a bite - https://chumleysnewyork.com/

An old speakeasy from the 1920s with a fantastic vibe about the place

I've always wanted to go here just for the Suzanne Vega reference https://www.tomsrestaurant.net/ (she renamed it Toms Diner)
    Red ones are better.

Katz is good for a sandwich and a beer.

Del Posto is essential if you’re going for a big anniversary. You have dress fairly well, but their lunch has a set menu for about $60 and it’s the Best Thing. Go for the wine pairings if you want to spend more and get a bit pished. Don’t go for dinner - it’s way more expensive. Right next to Chelsea market and the high line so you can spend the day in the area if you want

Keste is v good for pizza (including really good gluten free if you need). They have 3 or 4 locations iirc.

Absolutely visit Katz's it's the only meal you'll need that day.

Depending on budget, I can recommend brunch at the Mandarin Oriental at Columbus Circle, the views are amazing.

There are some really good pizza and mexican places in Hells Kitchen

And for a very, very cool venue and good food -

Dallas BBQ is you want a social experience of how other people eat, or alternatively if you like massively huge portions of unhealthy food

an off the wall suggestion, is Cafe 82, on Upper West Side, near the Nathural History Museum.  We found it for lunch when knackered after spending the morning in the museums. It is real old school REAL New York cafe with real New York people serving and real New York people eating.  The food was good and “wholesome” , the service was just really nice and friendly, the locals were friendly and real.  Nothing snazzy, nothing posh, but I still remember it as a highlight of our trip.

  • I loved Sparks Steak House. Old school Italian American restaurant, the kind of place mafia boss's meet in films, feels like being in Goodfellas of the Sopranos. Yes really, in 1985 mafia boss Paul Castellano was whacked, gunned down outside it's entrance! Had an incredible steak and good service from the Italian American waiters, apart from when we asked which country the beef came from, which they did not like!

I'll second that suggestion. We only booked there as my wife wanted to go as apparently it was used in a big scene in Sex And The City. However, it was a fantastic all round experience and I was thoroughly impressed.

If you fancy splashing out on a fancy steak dinner I'd highly recommend Keen's Steakhouse, the oldest steakhouse in Manhattan. Food is incredible (as are the prices!!!)

Grimaldi's pizza just across the Brooklyn Bridge. It's a bit of a New York institution and you'll have to queue and they don't serve alcohol. Pizzas are superb though.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

    +1 for del Posto

Absolutely amazing place. Top top service. Fantastic food. Don’t be put off by the exterior. It’s a must go.
