If I flew into NY, spent a week there then a week in Boston (and fly back from there), should I:
  • transfer by Amtrak
  • transfer by Amtrak, rent a car whilst there for sightseeing outside the town
  • rent a car in NY and drive there

I'd skip the car unless there really is something outside of Boston you really want to see. Then just hire the car for the day.

Train journey is really easy between New York and Boston. I’d take 5he train and then hire a car in Boston if you need one.

If if you go for the option of hiring a car in New York, driving there is surprisingly easy. Won’t be an issue for you but if you have to return a hire car in Manhattan be aware that there are (or were in 2009) only two petrol stations on the island.
