How do you consume music?

What's Hot

I'm studying how music is consumed for an MA course I'm doing. I'd appreciate your feedback. Which of the following ways do you use to get new music?

  1. Vinyl
  2. CD
  3. USB
  4. Download
  5. Streaming

Thanks

  • CD and downloaded WAV files that I generally burn a CD from. I also rip them into Apple Lossless format and stream them from my network server at home and/or copy them to my iDevices.

I don't do streaming as a service because there are too many gaps in their content catalogues and they can chop and change the version of a recording that they serve up.

  • Download and streaming, just as I have done for about 15 years.

  • I still buy the odd CD especially for use in the car. Otherwise streaming.
I have the radio on a bit and sometimes use BBC Sounds or internet radio and some of this is music, if that counts as consumes.

"Consume" - what a horrible word.  All the connotations of music being something disposable that you "have" once and then discard once it's been consumed.

I'd usually interpret "consume" to mean "how do I listen to music" in terms of the source media, location, etc.

But that's not consistent with your question ...

buy music on CD with the occasional download (usually Bandcamp) when physical media is unavailable or (usually Amazon) is the media is uneconomic.  But I'll often listen (consume?) new music via radio/podcasts, which sometimes leads onto the buy decision.

Can you get music on USB format??
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

I buy CDs. Stick quite a lot of them onto an iPod to use in the gym, but most of my listening time is CDs in the car.

Sometimes I stick Youtube on when working, but I don't do streaming at all.

I still have 1000+ vinyl albums but no room in the house for a record player for the past 20 years. One day .... one day ...

    Sorry for the waffly language.

I've seen music sold at gigs on USB.

    Yes.

I went to a concert about 10-12 years ago where they were selling a recording of the show on a USB stick, which was pretty cutting edge at the time!

  • Streaming, usually Spotify, occasionally Youtube.  Sometimes, but rarely, radio, mainly for classical.  Haven't purchased music in many years.

I don't buy any new music, I don't like it.

I bought Roger Waters' last album when it came out a couple of years ago on CD.

Multiple methods, depending on location and purpose:
Home hi fi: CDs ripped to a music server.
Workshop: radio. I’m considering a decoder for the music server, or streaming from my ‘phone.
In the Car: a mixture of CDs ripped to internal disk, plus streaming and download via ‘phone.
Elsewhere: downloads (set lists and possible songs), and streaming for other music
