Seeking inspiration from The Besnard Lakes

Recently been looking for a wee bit of inspiration in terms of new guitar sounds and effects. I've been stuck in a bit of a quiet/ loud with occasional reverb thrown in vibe for too long. The Besnard Lakes are interesting reference point in my search - I really like their 60's surf vibe and great use of modulation (which I really struggle with) combined with mighty moments of noise and whammy bar goodness.

I'm going to try and copy them over the weekend ;) Only problem being there's very little info about their effects set-up online... What other bands should I listen to teach me how to be a slightly more interesting alternative rock (or thereabouts). guitarist?

  • The really over the top but great sounding vibrato is the Diamond Vib 1 Vibrato. I saw the Bezzies at Cambridge a couple of years ago and it's probably one of my top five gigs. I love 'em to bits!
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

I saw them years and years ago in Edinburgh, where, to be honest, the sound engineer let them down. Would love to see them at a decent venue.

I want to be more than a loud, louder and absolutely fucking loud guitarist... There's must be more to me than stacked drives...

  • Have you tried putting your modulations before your drive stack?  For me, flanger, chorus, phaser and vibe work so much better pre-dirt...or at least sandwiched somewhere in the dirt chain so you have the option of pre- and post-dirt mod sounds.  I find modulations just sit back and blend in with a driven/noiser sound a little better when used pre-dirt.

No, no, no.... you do really want to be loud, louder and absolutely fucking loud guitarist... but just a tiny bit louder than that.

In the same line of thinking, I refitted my vibrato to my board for the last rehearsal but because it was a tight fit, I turned it upside down. I was in a bit of a hurry so I only checked that it was powering up. What I didn't realise was that, due to the upsidedownness, I'd ended up plugging it in it wrong way round so it didn't work. Idiot.

@lasermonkey I was at that gig too.  Cracking.

I was right down the front, on the left hand side. I was also wearing my ER20s, so the volume was just right for me!
I was the one that changed the string when the Tele player in the support band broke his. I'd forgotten to bring my glasses with me, so ended up doing it by feel alone, which was a first!

Ha!  I'd forgotten about the broken string. I almost put my hand up, but tbh were relieved when you did so :)

@lasermonkey love their vibrato and tremolo sounds, but it's the basic overdriven tone Im obsessing about. How to get that vintage twangy crunch (naff description). Probably something very normal like a Boss SD1 and decent Fender amp. I will continue to experiment...

I'm becoming like they guy at my work who's been trying to sound like Rory Gallagher for the last 15 years!
