Probably a bit mainstream for you intellectual muso types, but I was introduced to this crew through this very forum, and it was the soundtrack to my summer.

Laydeez and Djentlemen, I give you: The Interrupters

Given a wisdom as they are a bit ace but I know I discovered them in 2018 so I can’t copy your homework.

Anyway, I can’t think of anyone that’s a decent answer to the question so I’ll say Scott Walker as this year was the first time I listened to some of the album tracks. Best voice in the history of pop.

Squid. Intelligent post punk with trumpet and occasional cowbell.  They have a brilliant drummer who sings.
Yes! Been listening to them myself and saw them live a few months ago - really good and how the drummer does the vocal gymnastics at the same time as erm keeping time and drumming is beyond me.

Other new or newish bands catching my attention of the last 12 months or so:

    Viagra Boys
    The Murder Capital
    Hotel Lux
    Rolling Blackouts Coatal Fever
    Working Men’s Club

Established bands I should have got into earlier:

    Clinic
    Bambara

Green Lung.  Probably 2018 really, but they released their first album this year.

My son has been raving about them since he found out that they’re playing Bloodstock.  I’ll check them out today...

My musical discovery of 2019 was that I can no longer stand Led Zeppelin... it's Plant's voice mostly.

On a more positive note ;), the most notable band I've discovered this year is Panic! At The Disco. My 13-year-old daughter introduced me to them - I'd been vaguely aware that there was a band called that, but I hadn't paid much attention since the last band she was really into was One Direction... they - or more accurately Brendon Urie, since it's really a one-man band - is a brilliant songwriter and imaginative record maker.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

    "Just because I don't care, doesn't mean I don't understand." - Homer Simpson

Andy Shauf - does the acoustic singer songwriter thing with both melodic interest and compelling storytelling.

Finally got around to listening to some of Stephen Malkmus' post Pavement stuff. And, it is rather good.
Can't sing, can't dance, can handle a guitar a little.

My find of the years was excellent newish prog band Southern Empire. Two stunning albums, and they were excellent live, even though the crowd was disappointingly small.

Some of the most creative guitar playing I've heard in a very long time.

Have you checked out Star Gazer from oz as well?
Might also be worth having a listen to Deathspell Omega, Urfaust

Completely out of the blue I chanced upon Band Maid and what little hair I have left is still frazzled and smoking.

    Deftones.

First bought Diamond Eyes then the rest of the albums.

Can’t believe I missed them for this long!

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

Saw him at Secret Garden party in 2008, he did a cover of No One Knows and talked about how difficult it was to get a website domain registered with the name John Smith

I knew a man in Dublin in the early 80s called John Smith. He was married and on his travels within Ireland he had sometimes a problem checking into a hotel with his wife as Mr. and Mrs. John Smith. The country was quite conservative in those days.

    Nope!

I will check them out though, thanks for the recommendations as ever.

Back to Portal, I can't imagine they are a band for that many but everytime I listen to them I'm genuinely awkstruck by the sheer invention and creativity of the guitar playing.

  • Some brilliant stuff here.
Bevis Frond- fckn hell, how have I never heard of them? The guy's some kind of savant.
The Interrupters- Excellent, really remind me of Rancid, the singer even sounds like Tim Armstrong on some tracks.
Big Thief- Didn't expect to like them, but they're definitely the top level of that genre (whatever it is..)

Not sure what new stuff I found this year.
But new to me Los Twang Marvels

Also discovered that Jefferey Lee Pierce had become a pretty impressive guitarist before he passed on.
