Beginning swing style lead guitar

What's Hot

After a couple of years of predominantly playing bass, this year I really want to try and get back into 6 string playing, particularly the swing kind of style that the lead guitarist plays in this video. Does anyone have any advice on good online courses or books to develop in this style from scratch? Cheers.

  • Homespun tapes has a few videos along these lines.  I recently bought a Tony Rice flatpicking vid that comes with printable tab and tempo adjusting video instruction.  Pretty good deal for the price.  Sorry, no url handy, google homespun tapes to find them.

I’ve been doing swing for a couple of years. Will PM you!

The thing I found most useful is:

There's also good book by Stephan Wrembel on Gypsy Jazz Guitar, which is not perfectly idiomatic to non-gypsy swing, but is still a really good introduction to improvising in that basic style. I recommend the Wrembel book, because it takes a fairly simple approach.

In terms of rhythm playing, I can recommend some stuff if you are interested.

Jonathan Stout's blog is also worth a look.

Check out some David Hamburger (I know!) Matthieu Brandt and David Blacker videos = and they're also Truefire instructors - for some good swing, West Coast and jump blues. Plenty of free lessons on YouTube from them.  And Tommy Harkenrider, of course - he's great. Jonathan Stout is also superb for swing/jazz in a slightly older style.

If anyone wants to practice over this style, I've tried to create something simialr for this month's Solo of the Month challenge at the link below:
    https://www.thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/172929/solo-of-the-month-sotm-57-chat#latest

I'm assuming the SotM backing isn't plagiarism as it's just a standard 12 bar in C.

    It's not a competition.
