What's Hot

So...this thing is in the house...

...and it sounds mental!

It’s a Cold War-tastic Formanta Lider-2. It weighs as much as a 1981 Gaz-24, too.

Either Putin has invaded or the H7 gear event horizon now spreads to Russia.
    Be seeing you.

  • Seriously though,it appears to be a Soviet version of something like a Boss ME 50 - all seperate stompbox functions, discrete but in the one box with proper knobs for controls. Well it's that or it summons Daleks in Russian. Could be either. or both.

While it *looks* a bit like a Roland GR-300, it’s most definitely not a guitar synth. As @Doctorstewie says, in reality, it’s essentially quite a simple multi-effects unit (with a wee bit of fancy switching). However, more on this later...

    Cobbled together specs from t’interweb:

The Lider-2 is a guitar effects processor produced in the 1980`s by the Katchkanar radio equipment factory "Formanta", which also produced synthesizers (Polivoks, Manual, Maestro etc).

    Effects:
    *Tone Corrector
    *Flanger
    *Chorus
    *Solo
    *Rhythm

    Controls:
    *General - Amplifier (ON)
    *Output (Effect, Scale)
    *Trigger (ON)

    LED Indicators:
    *Control
    *Overload
    *Effect

    Tone Corrector:
    *Level
    *Tone 1
    *Tone 2
    *Tone 3

    Flanger:
    *Range
    *Brightness
    *Rate
    *Width

    Chorus:
    *Frequency
    *Detuning

    Solo:
    *Spectrum (Tone)
    *Rock Tone
    *Sub Octave

    Rhythm
    *Guitar

    Footswitches:
    *Tone Corrector
    *Flanger
    *Chorus
    *Solo/Rhythm
    *Effect Bypass

It’s built to agricultural standards, is heavier than a heavy thing and sounds mental.

This example seems to pretty much fully work, but is in need of a damn good service (noisy controls/sliders with drop-out, etc).

In many ways, the modulation effects are similar to UK stuff of the era (think Carlsbro Chorus, Flanger, etc - those huge mains-powered things with the coloured stripe). Very analog-sounding and not as ‘rich’ as, say, a Boss CE-2.

It gets interesting when you run everything together - the Octave section is quite OTT and musical, so you’re suddenly in Muse-esque territory.

There are some demo vids online, but most don’t seem to do the unit justice in terms of the “crazy” factor (most appear to be from Reverb sellers, so maybe dwell more on other attributes).

    All-in-all...I love it! D

If it’s essentially a Soviet ME-50, can you get me one too?

Looks like it was designed by someone who had never seen a multi-fx unit and had only the very vaguest of 2nd hand descriptions of a blind man to go on.

That said it has big sodding chunks of cool about it.

That’s a fair description of most Soviet-era guitar gear!

You should see their analogue synthesizers!

Perhaps, you can? H7 probably already owns examples of most of them. ;)
