Online chords

Thankfully I have a good ear and don’t have to rely on tabs and chord charts of famous songs that litter the internet because most of them are wrong I find :(

Well wrong in the way that they miss out the nuances of chord extensions that make a song enjoyable to play but sometimes totally the wrong chords even when they’re in a different key from the original.

Some are a good starting point though admittedly but have one has to take everything with a pinch of salt

Rant over lol. Does anyone else find this and resort to our god given musical ears if we have them ;)

I prefer to rely on my ears. Online tabs can be particularly bad, but I have occasionally resorted to looking at them just as a shortcut to get me going quickly before working out the finer points myself. I prefer to create my own chord charts using Musescore, or using Guitar Pro for transcribing solos combining standard notation and tab.

I'll also sometimes look at online Youtube tutorials to check out ways of playing things, to see if anyone has got a better take on it than me.

    It's not a competition.

I find Guitar Pro 7 is best for transcribing guitar solos and for capturing the finer points of guitar playing technique in standard notation combined with tab.

Musescore can do it to a certain extent, but it's more general purpose and isn't as directed towards the finer points of guitar playing technique. However, it's way better for slash and rhythmic slash chord charts combined with standard notation (or tab). Plus it's free.

    It's not a competition.

You can notate chords with extensions (i.e. 9th, 13th etc). But I'm not aware that it makes suggestions. I use Guitar Pro and Musecore as tools for notating things.

For help in working out chords (or notes), Transcribe! has a spectrum display (combined with a keyboard display) as an aid to working out the precise notes that are present. If you want a sledge hammer approach to working out the notes present in the audio, then Melodyne can do it, but I haven't used it for that purpose.

I believe Scaler 2 can work out chords from audio but I haven't used it for that purpose yet.

Update. If you enter the notes of a chord in Guitar Pro 7, then it will make a suggestion of what the chord is if you click on the chord box. Is that what you meant? See below.

Usually will figure out by ear then go and watch a live version of the person playing the part themselves on YouTube. Then check it against the recording.

most guitar tab on the internet is incorrect anyway and usually doesn’t have rhythm stems. I do all own tab with rhythm so it tells you the exact subdivision it’s being played at.
