I enjoyed his playing, in isolation. He was a master of his instrument.
Some folks like water, some folks like wine.
    My feedback thread is here.

  • Nice story from Bernie Marsden:

Donington Park, 1984 - AC/DC were headlining and Van Halen, Ozzy, Gary Moore and Y&T were also all on the bill. I was there as a guest that year, seeing and hanging out with some mates, Gary Moore being my closest friend on the bill.

Gary had played his set and had been received royally as the true guitar hero he was. I told him I really wanted to go and watch Van Halen from the side of the stage, and told him to come and join me. Neither of us had seen Eddie playing live before, but I was so excited to see him play, gushing about his ability. Gary was obviously aware of the Van Halen records, and slightly reluctantly agreed to join me. I told him that I thought Eddie was the modern equivalent of Eric Clapton - his guitar style was being absorbed and obsessed over by a whole new generation of guitarists. Just like Eric did for us. Gary didn’t seem so sure!

We took our places side stage and within a few moments Gary was transported. His mouth opening wider in awe, “Bern, I had no idea he was THIS good!”

That’s how good Eddie Van Halen was, folks - take it from Gary Moore.

Thank you EVH - you reinvented what it was to be a guitar hero

    I was there...

Gallien Krueger cabs on stage if I remember correctly..

I haven't listened to VH for some time but given Eddie's untimely passing I've refreshed my memory... I'm still just as awe struck as I was as a young kid listening for the first time again.. very sad.

    Still can't believe this.
BTW can I just say VH didn't play a Fender or a Gibson (on the whole). He played MUSIC and not on some "accepted" guitar.
It's funny we have all the virtuoso players these days but they don't seem to stand as tall as legends like VH.

Anyone see the Right Here Right Now tour?

I was at the Birmingham NEC, Little Angels opened.

Strangely my clearest memory of the gig was Sammy talking about British beer between songs and downing a can of Boddingtons!
Cool!  That was the only tour I managed to catch, but in Milan in my case.  I don't remember a lot sadly, specially considering I was standing directly in front of EVH, I was too close I suppose.  I remember thinking he was proper fucking hammered.  And standing there thinking how is it possible that someone so fucked up can play like that. He did his solo like 10 feet from me, flawless and just stunning, with latency :)

I met the Little Angels guys in a club afterwards, I remember a very tall guy loudly saying in my ear "Fuckin 'Ell!! You're from Dublin!!" in what I thought was a strong Birmingham accent.  They seemed to enjoy chatting with someone from home, well you know, close.

is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?
