The Darkglass B3K is amazingly versatile despite it's metal reputation. I use mine for school warmth at low levels when I still had a big band to play in.

Suppose I usually use quite a mid-y, guitar-y tone for bass. Not super low frequency anyway, I like to be able to hear it.
I also really like a Rat when blended using my LS-2.
When I'm mixing live shows with bassisrs that use a lot of drive I like to take a clean DI before any pedals and blend it with a mic on the cab - big clean low end from the DI and all the grit from the mic.
