Chord Chart

I am looking for a chord chart which shows the chords in the Key Sig' rather than all the A chords, B chords etc.

I told my brother that I will get him one. He plays pretty well but has no idea what the name of the chord is.

A diatonic chord chart? Can't help with a book, but that phrase'll make it easier to google :)

I've got free lessons at hubpages.com which cover this, or you could look for harmonised scale.

Alternatively, teach him some music theory. Learning enough to identify most chords and make up your own isn't difficult. Much easier than, for example, leaning how to play barre chords, or developing a decent vibrato.

Funnily enough perhaps, I think I learned more about chords by using  simple piano keyboard

I always loved the sounds that Billy Joel (piano) and Ralph McTell (guitar and piano) used to “find” in their songs that made the “magic”  .  I don’t know why in my earlier guitar years I didn’t work this out by just adding other notes with my fingers to root chords or inversions.  But it just is easier on a keyboard (esp working in C major because it is easy to see what any new note is in relation to the I), even the black keys.

Anyway, these days i can / do it on guitar, and of course some of Ralph’s magic is only possible on a guitar tuned the way it is or altered, that even a piano can’t replicate.

a good book for chord progressions in a key is the Rikki Rooksby series (e.g. How to write songs on a guitar; ChordMaster - how to write the right  chords, etc. He has a variety)

I always transpose the keyboard and I have become quite proficient on the white keys. I also like how the tonic and dominant never move, and it's great for prototyping new ideas. Also check out the Plugin Boutique Scaler software which puts your keyboard on steroids.

I’ve got one that’s great but it’s for DADGAD...

An alternative could be a regular chord book and a chord wheel http://www.chordwheel.com/ ?

It’s a good halfway house towards theory I think

The Chord! app does alternative tunings, plus reverse harmonization and reverse scale lookup. Try the demo, it's a useful tool for guitarists.
