DAW (free) for iMac OSX 10.11.6 El Capitan other than Garageband?

No doubt I'm doing something wrong but having the only export (share) option of mp3 from Garageband isn't great and moreover isn't as clear as the garageband playback. Some interference is getting in there. In any case, I don't need any of the plug-ins etc; I just need a simple DAW for my old MacBookPro late 2008 so I can record clearly my spoken voice or add guitar from my OX box into a mix.
El capitan 10.11.6
I'm using a PreSonus Firestudio Mobile.
Reaper would have been perfect but the OSX is too old.
Any suggestions?

    According to the Audacity website, although it's not supported on El Capitan, it's believed to work.

    There are all the older versions of Reaper on the download page, I still have it running on a macbook pro from 2008, OS is stuck, but Reaper still works, not sure of the version.

    Yeah older Reaper works fine on El Cap, I actually have it on Yosemite.

    Which version should I use? I only see v.6 on their site.

    I'd start by trying the latest version, and work backwards, I have had latest version working on all my older Win machines, such a quick process, you'll have it up and running in minutes.

    Thank you @Danny1969 and @andy_k ;
    I went with the earliest version and it's all up and running. Day two and I've even got playback! Miracles can happen.
    The live vocal recording sounds like I'm a robot though (as it did with garageband) so I'm either still doing something wrong or the sound card DA is poor. Once recorded, it sounds great.
