On Taylor Swift's album Folklore it has a number of clever references between the songs Cardigan, August and Betty

They tell the story of a teenage couple meeting, the guy cheating and then them getting back together.
There are multiple lyrical references between all three songs.

The song "Gold Rush" on Evermore is a tribute to her boyfriend and has the lyric: "My mind turns your life into Folklore" referencing the preceding album.

And your shoulders are frozen (cold as the night)
Oh, but you're an explosion (you're dynamite)
Your name isn't Rio, but I don't care for sand
And lighting the fuse might result in a bang, b-b-bang-oh

I bet that you look good on the dance floor
I don't know if you're looking for romance or
    I don't know what you're looking for
I said, I bet that you look good on the dance floor
Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984
    Well, from 1984

[Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor]
    Brilliant song. (And songwriter.)

I've never been 100% convinced by the Arctic Monkeys. But "...Dancefloor" is a top tune.

  • Not a well known song, but one of my favourite songs of recent years - a beautiful song about a girl called Georgia, cleverly referencing Ray Charles' Georgia On My Mind...

Southern Rock Opera by Drive-by Truckers kicks off with a song about a car crash soundtracked by Freebird.

It also has a superb love letter to dead rock and roll heroes, Let There be Rock, which references The Boys are Back in Town and er....Let There Be Rock

Not exactly on topic but a great pub quiz question - which 1976 number one hit was knocked off the top spot by a song, the name of which appeared in the lyrics of the song being knocked off the top?

Mamma Mia and Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't it?

Mamma Mia also being the worst song title to sing whilst playing hide and seek with your mother

As I have the new Wolf Alice Album on rotation I’ll add this from No Hard Feelings:

    It’s not hard to remember
When it was tough to hear your name
    Crying in the bath
To “Love is a Losing Game”

The Waterboys - The Return Of Jimi Hendrix

Possibly not Mike Scott's finest hour as a songwriter, but it does reference quite a lot of Hendrix tracks.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski
