How do you know, for certain, that your song/melody is original?

Why is it so important for it to be viewed as 100% original (a nigh-on possibility)?

If I write something and a friend of mine says 'that sounds a bit like X', as long as X isn't someone I can't stand, I really don't mind.

I'd suggest concentrating on making it as good as possible rather than as original as possible. People are much more likely to like something good over something original.

It is annoying when you write something that is actually pretty identical to some song you had totally forgotten you knew though. I once accidentally wrote a Cire song several years after last listening to them.

I was playing Bird of Paradise (Snowy white) this week
but kept singing Brothers in Arms (Dire Straits)

made for quite a good mash up actailly

Despite this comparison being made a dozen times, I've never quite seen it

We had a practice once where our singer sang Robbie Willam's "Angels" for every song. Was pretty entertaining for all the weird ass time sig ones.
