Dumb Q about acoustic panels/tiles.

What's Hot
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I've finally got my spare room/music room sorted, and I want to put up some soundproofing, especially on the wall between myself and next door (she doesn't want to be hearing my early morning practise sessions) and I'm wondering about acoustic panels and how to attach them. I don't really want to be putting them up on a permanent basis, so can they be stuck up using something like double sided tape or similar?

  • Might be worth mentioning at this point that acoustic treatment for a better/flatter frequency listening experience and sound proofing are two different things and acoustic treatment panels like the ones you're referring to won't do much to solve the latter.

    What's your main goal?

Accoustic panels won’t really soundproof a room… but to hang them…do as you would a picture… mine are just sat on two very long screws:

They need to be away from the wall tho’
Flush against the wall is no good, mine sit a good 50mm off the wall.

Realistically they should be 100mm off the wall as they are 100mm thick.

the goal is soundproofing/reduction. So what do I need for that, them foam eggbox thingies?

Ideally a room inside the room with a big air gap between the walls…

gah, sadly that's not possible. I'm really struggling for space as it is.

EDIT: at this rate it'll be cheaper to buy a low end electric fiddle and play unplugged.

  • Unfortunately those foam eggbox thingies couldn't soundproof an ant, let alone you bashing away on your guitar.

There's not much you can do about that unless you spend copious amounts of money.

My best advice is to get a way to play silently, through headphones. Load box with your amp or amp modeller or do what I do and use plugins.

Yeah, soundproofing an existing room is basically a non-starter I'm afraid.

French cleats are much better for hanging acoustic panels on, especially if you want them level with one another.

As others have said acoustic treatment and sound proofing are different things.

fair enough, as it turns out, spoke to neighbours this afternoon, explained the situation to them and as it happens, the room of theirs that'd be the most effected isn't habitable or lived in, so I can "make as much noise as I like".

Sounds good, but be wary of any knocks on the wall when you are playing - Im sure there was a film about that ;)

the knocks are telling me to play louder? Have I got that right?

Only 2 things stop sound. Mass or a lack of a medium to travel in, like a vacuum in space. The best thing you can do without spending a lot is add mass to the existing wall by putting another 2 layers of 12mm plasterboard on it. Stagger the joints so they are in different places per layer and fill gaps by corking it out with easyfill.

Low frequencies like bass guitar and kick drum won't be attenuated much as low frequencies are incredibly hard to stop but anything above 120Hz ish will be improved quite a bit.
