I put apps and plugins on the internal drive.
Trust me, it is easier in the long run.

Misc Samples on a dedicated 2TB drive.
Audio on a dedicated 2TB drive.
I have to put Native Instruments on its own 2TB drive.
I have another 2TB for Spitfire and misc VI libraries (DFH,Spectrasonics etc)

I have the OS, DAW and all plugs on the internal drive. Then I do the actual session on the internal drive, back it up using session copy inc all audio files to an external drive at the end .

i don't ever use drives bigger than 1Tb, just see too many failures in my main job in electronics, repairing drives and doing data recovery.

When using external drives it's important to use a type that has an external removable USB / TB to SATA translator PCB and not one built onto the hard drive controller board. If you look at my thread on this page you can see how easy recovery of the drive and data is if the translator board has gone faulty but is removable compared to being built on the controller board.

So you reckon things like Waves central and all the associated plugin and add ins are beetr on the internal.

im concious that the internal drive is only 256G so am at risk of filling this with tons of plugins….

out of interest …why NI on separate drive….just due to file size ?

All plugins are on an internal drive for my desktop. And all music libraries are on an external 4TB drive, which I've named as my F drive.

I set up my laptop in the same way to effectively mirror my desktop. It also has an identical set of music libraries on an external 4TB drive, also named as my F drive for my laptop. So, if one external music library hard drive goes down, I can do a quick swap.

It proved useful when I recently started to approach the limit of a previous 1TB music library drive. All I had to do was copy all my music libraries to a new 4TB drive, then rename that as my F drive. All the mappings were already set to my F drive for NI, Spectrasonics, Steven Slate, XLN, BFD3 etc, so it wasn't necessary to reset mapping paths within individual VSTi's.

    It's not a competition.

    If you can then yes.
But 256GB doesn't leave you a lot of space, so I would say in your case probably not.

I always spec the highest internal drive I can afford- my Mac Pro has 4TB.
It should be good for the next 5-7 years.

Yes, NI is 1.4TB. I put it on an internal 2TB M.2 drive, on a PCIE drive.

Two Samsung Evos (1tb) - one in place of my laptop’s old hdd hard drive; this one’s for Windows files, plus software not related to music.

The other is in a caddy adapter, where my optical drive used to be. This is where I store my DAW, Kontakt, NI, VSTs etc. (Incidentally I have trouble migrating Waves plugs to this drive - for some reason it doesn’t seem possible to move them from their default location on my windows c: drive).

I plan on backing everything up on HDD.

For this of you using USB C connections….what cables are you using ?

Ive discovered so far not the official Apple cable seems to work with Mac M1 and both the Quantum 2626 and the Samsung T7.

I got a cheaper Belkin cable and it doesn’t work with either, Belkin say it hasn’t been tested with those devices.
