Trust me, it is easier in the long run.
Misc Samples on a dedicated 2TB drive.
Audio on a dedicated 2TB drive.
I have to put Native Instruments on its own 2TB drive.
I have another 2TB for Spitfire and misc VI libraries (DFH,Spectrasonics etc)

i don't ever use drives bigger than 1Tb, just see too many failures in my main job in electronics, repairing drives and doing data recovery.
When using external drives it's important to use a type that has an external removable USB / TB to SATA translator PCB and not one built onto the hard drive controller board. If you look at my thread on this page you can see how easy recovery of the drive and data is if the translator board has gone faulty but is removable compared to being built on the controller board.

im concious that the internal drive is only 256G so am at risk of filling this with tons of plugins….
out of interest …why NI on separate drive….just due to file size ?

But 256GB doesn't leave you a lot of space, so I would say in your case probably not.
I always spec the highest internal drive I can afford- my Mac Pro has 4TB.
It should be good for the next 5-7 years.
Yes, NI is 1.4TB. I put it on an internal 2TB M.2 drive, on a PCIE drive.

The other is in a caddy adapter, where my optical drive used to be. This is where I store my DAW, Kontakt, NI, VSTs etc. (Incidentally I have trouble migrating Waves plugs to this drive - for some reason it doesn’t seem possible to move them from their default location on my windows c: drive).
I plan on backing everything up on HDD.
Ive discovered so far not the official Apple cable seems to work with Mac M1 and both the Quantum 2626 and the Samsung T7.
I got a cheaper Belkin cable and it doesn’t work with either, Belkin say it hasn’t been tested with those devices.
