Damn! I'm soooo envious!!! I have no bloody space at all in my house. Depressing.

You have amazing kit there, I'd be happy with just a bit of space.

Enjoyed that, thanks for sharing that.

And as Waz said, great to hear the dulcet tones of the Black Country! I'm over in Brummy Land these days and I need to hear a touch of yam-yam now and again :)

If you guys could kindly "like" the vid that helps the old YT algorithm push it up the rankings ;-)

@spark240 - It's only looking that way because a lot of the clutter is packed up ready for band rehearsal.  Most of the time it's a shit-hole, but it's my shit-hole and I like it that way =)

Here's a quick, 2 minute, tour of my home studio.

How do you use the x-touch?

I have a bcf2000 hooked up and havent really found a nice way to work with it so I tend to just end up mousing in automation.

Spark, when you say the 2012 Mac Mini occasionally struggles, is that with particularly complex projects or just for "normal" projects (whatever normal means)? Say if you had a drum vst, bass vst and let's vst, with a couple of guitar tracks and a couple of vocal tracks, would it cope with that? With plugin effects on the tracks and the master.

I only ask because I've been wanting a studio computer for ages rather than battling with my laptop, but struggling to justify the new M1 minis being more than three times the price I could pick up a 2012 mini. Obviously the new ones are going to be better but are they that much better for a simple soul such as me?

I'd say that for 90%+ of the time I'm not using the automation, I'm just using the faders and pan like a tradditional mixer.  Having the physical faders means that I'm using my ears rather than my eyes.

When I do use automation I tend to work one fader at a time so I'll just put the track that I'm focusing on into write mode, make my changes (tidy up with the mouse if I feel the need), then return the track into read and move on to the next element.

The transport and asignable function buttons are useful for navigating a project, switching to cycle mode and muting the main monitors etc.  Once you know where the buttons are it's much more convenient than reaching for the mouse.  I don't think that I've ever used it for EQ as I do like to drag the curve using the mouse.

The secret is in the use of camera angles ;)

Yeah what you describe is fine, no issues, ...its when I have say 25 + tracks loaded with FX and in particular if I start using heavy CPU synths, I mean there are ways round it but with editing the YT vids and recording with OBS and so on it was time for me to upgrade a little.

Most its about having a constant setup , mine is untidy in my vid as Im running 2 Macs at the same time at the moment, plus Im always tweaking something an moving stuff, but thing like screens, monitors, rack gear and interface are all pretty fixed.

One thing I found was that the navigation made the faders less useful as it banks around in 8 track increments it doesnt line up nicely with the faders. To get around this I created some templates where I bus everything to 8 tracks at the start of the project but even then I found I actually do a fair bit of balancing at a sub-bus level...I do actually have another 8 faders available on my keyboard but haven't worked out how to get those to work in conjunction with the bcf ones so that they bank around together.
