Studio One and Mac mini M1 …interesting

I’m currently migrating from 2012 mini to M1 mini and whilst I’m still working progress, I tried something yesterday following a post in another forum.

I loaded identical songs into Studio One on both machines, all setting the same.

The 2012 idle CPU was around 20%….the M1 about 32% …seems odd to me.

on playback…the 2012 was up at 45%…the M1 still around 35%…

Should I be expecting much bigger differences ?

I’ve got a vid of this to post, in the meantime here’s my part 1 of the migration.

    1) refused point blank to migrate the information across so I had to set it up fresh
    2) couldn’t see any of my external hard drives… 20 odd years of clients images and video etc
    3) would not run even 1 of my plugins in logic!!!!

To add insult to injury, I called apple and spoke to a lovely lady who kept calling me “dear” and was reading from a cheat sheet… she suggested I do a clean install and insisted her way was right… I asked her numerous times if she was sure that “erase disk” was the correct thing (knowing full well it wasn’t but by that point I’d got the hump) and she turned it into a nice looking brick!

I’ve been using Mac since ‘97 and can honestly say that was the biggest ball ache I’ve ever experienced with one!…

so instead I grabbed a tb2 sata enclosure and a new ssd… Mac is running super fast now…

I’m looking to do the same thing soon.

I’ve got a 2012 Mac mini and want to replace with an M1.

I use a focusrite clarett 8PreX.. which looks to have just had drivers released for m1… but it’s going to be an adapters job to get it connected. A Thunderbolt2 to Thunderbolt3 cable doesn’t seem to exist.. only Apple’s adapter.

Is studio 1 a native M1 app? Or using their emulation to run?

I didn’t get as far as installing fcp, or lightroom… I just knew it wasn’t going to play ball…
I’ll wait a bit for all the developers to catch up I think.

the external ssd has made a shit tonne of difference tho’
mid 2015 iMac… I timed it yesterday, 35 seconds from hitting the power button to being able to use it!!!! had to render three vids for a client yesterday and was not looking forward to a day or so of sitting there watching the blue bar… was done by lunchtime :)

then spent an hour loading loads of plugins in logic to see if I could get it to fall over :)

Just had a look on Presonus’ website.

    • Apple M1 processor supported with Rosetta 2
The overhead will probably be Rosetta 2.

I don’t think Presonus fully support the M1 silicone yet….S1 V5 installed fine as did most of my software and plugins, Waves is still a bit iffy as is Slate.

If you seen my vid you see 2 monitors is also a faff but it should work fine, the main issue is connections , I seem to have a ton of usb requirements so I will need a super size USB-C hub…

I will try and post the CPU related vid tonight….

    It will be.

I develop a cross-platform app and the difference in speed between the Intel version running under Rosetta 2 and the native Silicon version is amazing. 3-4 times faster.

What does this say about my CPU usage being less on the old 2012 than on the new M1 ?

    I can post a vid tonight….it might help ?

If Studio One is running under Rosetta 2 on the M1 there will be overhead which may make it run slower than on an Intel Mac (and use more CPU).

The Intel version of the app I develop runs faster on an Intel Mac than on an M1 Mac. With the Silicon compiled version the opposite is true.

There is no way I'd be running M1 as a primary device right now.
Maybe not for 2 years for me.

So I need to edit the vid clips and post.....but as an experiment tonight I tried -

    1. Open S1 on both Macs at the same time ( M1 10sec / 2012 40sec.)
    2. Open song on both Macs at the same time ( M1 wins)
    3. Duplicate a track ( Izotope Iris) until the death ( well almost)

The 2012 Mini ( i7 2.3 16G ram) crashed out at 10 instance of the same track 100% CPU

The M1 got to 80 ....yes 80 instances of the same track at around 78% CPU...I reckon I could have gone to 100 tracks.

Now clearly this is a fairly basic test...but it must prove something ;-)
